Zeno (ca. 490 ca. 430 B.C. Zeno of Elea was a philosopher. Unfortunately, we know little of his life, and none of his publications have survived. We know of his work only from other references. Zeno did produce a book that contained 40 paradoxes, four of which had significant effect on mathematics. Aristotle's work refers to Zeno's four paradoxes of "Dichotomy," "Achilles," "Arrow," and "Stadium." These paradoxes involve the idea of summing finite series and understanding infinitesimals. Aristotle was not taken in by Zeno's paradoxes and called them fallacies. However, it wasn't until more modern times and through the development of the calculus that mathematics developed the notation and results to adequately handle Zeno's challenging contradictions.

Zeno of Elea (495-430 BC).
Home: Southwestern Italy.
School: Eleatic, student of Parmenides.
Rational/Empirical: Rationalist, idealist, monist.
Influence: lasting, and quite annoying.
Greatest achievement: Zeno's paradox, master and possibly creator of philosophical dialectical reasoning. His paradoxes used the form of reducing his opponents position to abusurdity, known today as reductio ad absurdum. Zeno was a supporter of Holism and a denier of pluralism
Surviving works: Only fragments remain, but the writings of Plato and Aristotle provide textual references to Zeno's writings. Zeno was a true metaphyscian. He pondered the ultimate reality of the universe, leaving behind mundane worldly concerns. What he is most famous for today was his agreement with his master, Paramenides, that the universe is a single, undifferentiated substance, a oneness, although it may appear diversified to the senses. However, unlike Paramenides, Zeno did not simply accept the contradiction. He sought to obliterate it, logically. In doing so, he was perhaps the first to use dialectical thinking in philosophy. The problem Zeno needed to solve was how it was that to our eyes, everything seems separate - my body appears separate from yours, the sky is separate from both of our bodies, and so on, while our minds tell us otherwise. Furthermore, each individual form is capable of movement from another. Another contradiction that needed to be solved.

POTPOURRI
The project is named for Zeno of Elea who posed many paradoxes related to the nature of motion. One of his paradoxes, called "The Arrow" , deals with the cinematographic nature of motion; in other words, although reality is made up of instants in which everything is still, if we take those instants one after another we have motion. This is precisely what this project deals with taking frozen instants of time, shipping them over a network, then putting them together to create motion. Little is known about Zeno of Elea. His fame derives mainly from four paradoxes of motion attributed to him by Aristotle. None of Zeno's writings have survived, but a few passages by other authors are purported to be direct quotations. It is known that Zeno lived in the fifth century B.C., and that he was a devoted disciple of Parmenides. Parmenides maintained that reality is one, immutable, and unchanging; all plurality, change, and motion are mere illusions of the senses. Zeno proposed a series of paradoxes designed to show the absurdity of the views of those who made fun of Parmenides. Zeno's paradoxes have been the object of extensive historical research, especially in the last hundred years.

Thales
Thales of Miletus lived around the turn of the 6c. B.C.E. According to Herodotus he was semite. Virtually all ancient sources agree that he was one of the Seven Sages . In the first book of the Metaphysics (I.3, 983b20) Aristotle credits him with founding physical science. In fact, there was not much that the ancients didn't credit Thales with doing. Herodotus says he advised the Ionians on the site of their capital. He was credited with achievements in economics, engineering, geography, astronomy and mathematics. An old tradition holds that he successfully predicted the solar eclipse of May 28, 585, but this may just be part of the legends and exaggerations that embroidered his reputation. According to another famous story, Croesus, King of Lydia, consulted Thales as to how he might cross the Halys River with his army, and Thales, like the modern-day army corps of engineers, is supposed to have engineered the digging of a channel to divert sufficient water to make the crossing feasible. Zeno van Elea
Zeno leefde van ± 490 tot ?
chronologisch:
