81. Colossus Neronis

Colossus Neronis
t first the word 'colossus' was used for big stones, which were carved into vague human forms. They symbolised the body of a dead man. Later 'colossos' was used for very big statues. In the course of history a lot of colossi - huge statues - have been made, like the Colossus of Rhodos. It was made in the third century BC and was higher than 30 meters. It watched over the harbour, spread-eagled across the banks. It was considered as one of the seven Wonders of the World.
The Colossus Neronis represented Nero as sun god. You could find it at the entrance of the Domus Aurea. It was a big bronze male statue of 30 meters and was carved by the Greek Zenodorus. Later Hadrian (117-138) placed it near the Amphitheatrum Flavium. That's why since the Middle Ages the Amphitheatrum Flavium had the name Colosseum, due to this gigantic statue of Nero.
After Nero's death, his head was knocked off and alternately replaced by the heads of other emperors.
A square tiled travertine floor in front of the Colosseum is still the only thing that reminds of this statue. Unfortunately urban development has swept away a lot of archaeologically interesting objects.
