Xenocrates 396-314 BCE
Greek philosopher who defended the philosophy of Plato against the criticism of Aristotle . As head of the Academy in the fourth century, Xenocrates held forth the quasi- Pythagorean view that the Platonic Forms , including even the individual human soul , are all numbers. Xenophanes of Colophon 570-475 BCE
Presocratic philosopher. He criticized the militarism and anthropomorphism of traditional Greek morality and religion, arguing that fundamental truth about the world is difficult to achieve. His opposition to conventional notions earned him the respect of later, more completely skeptical thinkers. Parmenides and Zeno studied with Xenophanes in Sicily before establishing their own school at Elea. Recommended Reading: Xenophanes of Colophon: Fragments at Amazon.com Also see SEP OCP IEP ColE ... Ernst Friedrich Ferdinand Zermelo

Z For.... Zermelo, Ernst Ferdinand (1871-1953) The German Mathematician was born in Berlin and studied at Berlin, Halle and Freiberg University and was the Professor of Mathematics at Gottingen and Zurich Universities. He gave the first axiomatic description of set theory in 1908. Although modified to avoid paradoxes, it still remains one of the standard methods of axiomating the theory. He proved in 1904 that any set could be well-ordered, a key result in many Mathematical applications of set theory. Home A B C ... Y ] [Z]
