E-business consultancy MarchFirst launches a national branding campaign in June 2000. The campaign's main goal, executives say, is not to bring in new business, but to enable them to recruit employees. Price tag: $50 million. The company has since laid off 2,100 employees. In November 2000, the Internet Underground Music Archive a.k.a. IUMA.com posts the following on its website: "Ladies and Gentlemen, we are overjoyed to present you with the ten winners of our 'Name Your Baby IUMA' Contest. Congratulations to these bold, beautiful babies Iuma Thornhill, Iuma Ross, Iuma Becht, Iuma Carlton, Iuma Farish, Iuma Devi, Iuma Godfrey, Iuma Daigre, Iuma Radnedge and Iuma Hebert!" Each baby is guaranteed $5,000 (and, presumably, a childhood full of schoolyard beatings).

    Touring Turn-of-the-Century America, 1880-1920
On March 18 Calhoun is remembered for his determined defense of the institution of slavery. During the course of his career, he reversed his stand as a nationalist and advocated states' rights as a means of preserving slavery in the South. As a South Carolina senator, Calhoun used the argument of states' rights to protect slavery in what is known as the Nullification Crisis of 1832-1833 At the end of his senatorial career, Calhoun opposed the Compromise of 1850 because of its proposed limits on slavery during the westward expansion of the nation. Calhoun was clearly a dying man as he was assisted to his desk on the Senate floor a few minutes past noon on March 4, 1850. A black cloak, which he had pulled around his emaciated body, added to the drama of the scene. Too weak to deliver the 42-page speech himself, Calhoun had his colleague Senator James Murray Mason (1798-1871) of Virginia read from a printed version for him. The emphasis of the speech was wholly on northern aggressions and against the trend for conciliation and compromise. Calhoun believed that two separate nations now existed, and if the differences between them could not be settled, the two should agree to part in peace. Three days later, on

    http://aleph0.clarku.edu/~djoyce/mathhist/mathhist.html
Every culture on earth has developed some mathematics. In some cases, this mathematics has spread from one culture to another. Now there is one predominant international mathematics, and this mathematics has quite a history. It has roots in ancient Egypt and Babylonia, then grew rapidly in ancient Greece. Mathematics written in ancient Greek was translated into Arabic. About the same time some mathematics of India was translated into Arabic. Later some of this mathematics was translated into Latin and became the mathematics of Western Europe. Over a period of several hundred years, it became the mathematics of the world. There are other places in the world that developed significant mathematics, such as China, southern India, and Japan, and they are interesting to study, but the mathematics of the other regions have not had much influence on current international mathematics. There is, of course, much mathematics being done these and other regions, but it is not the traditional math of the regions, but international mathematics. By far, the most significant development in mathematics was giving it firm logical foundations. This took place in ancient Greece in the centuries preceding Euclid. See
