What do journalists, educators and researchers have in common?
In my ongoing quest to understand why personal knowledge publishing is becoming especially popular with certain professions , it occurred to me that people in these professions have another thing in common: they generally have little to hide, and sharing improves the quality of their work output. Stephen Downes explains what journalists and educators have in common, which seems to resonate well with my previous characterization of them as pattern recognizers:

Evolutionary Models of Information Transmission "The journal is a scientific journal dedicated to memetics, and issues of evolutionary information transmission. A meme is a copied concept or word, in analogy with genes, that are copied in biological evolution. The journal is for example about sociology, but also about evolution, cognition, and so on." Mindvirus is an inflatable underwater robot. Mindvirus utilises the technologies which enable semi-instant world-wide distribution + collection of information. Digital multimedia enables the exploration of information transfer + presentation as a new form of expression in itself. Mindvirus has been created as an alternative to popular mass-media + engages decentralised modes of information transference. The datazine is subversive by nature of its form as well as the content. Mindvirus is small + mobile, it is distributed, it is networked. It uses its host to replicate covertly + it feeds of its own hype. It has no hidden agenda. It is its own agenda."

Journal of Memetics: Evolutionary Models of Information Transmission
Sponsored by the Centre for Policy Modelling, the Prinicipia Cybernetica Project, and SEPA, Delft University of Technology ISSN 1366-4786 The Journal of Memetics is a new peer-reviewed academic journal. The editors feel that a journal on memetics can be an important place for scientists and professionals to discuss their views and research in memetics. The first issue is scheduled for May 1997. The journal will be published on the Internet without subscription fee. Like other journals, the Journal of Memetics will only publish papers after they have been approved by peer-review. In order to organize this we have an editorial board with reviewers, and an advisory board. The Journal of Memetics seeks to develop the memetic perspective, with space devoted to relevant evolutionary issues and other related topics. We seek to discuss issues concerning memetics such as:
  • Mechanisms involved in evolutionary processes (comparisons of different models of evolution are especially welcome)
  • Philosophical or theoretical issues concerning epistemology and evolution
  • Boundaries of the evolutionary approach
  • Empirical research
  • Fundamental approaches aiming at structuring the field of memetics as a science
Background:
In 1976, Dawkins invented the word 'meme,' defining it as 'the new replicator', 'a unit of cultural transmission, or a unit of imitation' [11]. The initial description of 'meme' by Dawkins is rather vague, as he admits himself [12], which is a possible reason for current diverging views on what a meme really is, and how the memetic model can be used. We are confronted with an avalanche of books, essays, and publications scattered over different journals and disciplines, with dialogue flashing up here and there in an unstructured manner. Many dialogues disappear after only a brief lifespan. This chaos exists because a general framework is lacking.

Virus of the Mind: The New Science of the Meme Virus of the Mind is the first popular book devoted to the science of memetics, a controversial new field that transcends psychology, biology, anthropology, and cognitive science. Memetics is the science of memes, the invisible but very real DNA of human society. In Virus of the Mind, author and creative genius Richard Brodie carefully builds on the work of scientists Richard Dawkins, Douglas Hofstadter Daniel Dennett , and others who have become fascinated with memes and their potential impact on our lives. Viruses of the mind are not a future worry: they are here with us now and are evolving to become better and better at their job of infecting us. The recent explosion of mass media and the information superhighway have made the earth a prime breeding ground for viruses of the mind. Will there be a mental plague? Will only some of us survive with our free will intact? Brodie weaves together science, ethics, and current events as he raises these and other disturbing questions about memes. Gatherer's ( ) demolition tour of mental memetics and the thought contagion metaphor is convincing and is to be applauded. Memetics organised around the interactions of thought contagions (e.g. Lynch ) is problematic because that interaction is neither observable nor measurable. This simple fact renders the thought contagion metaphor both conceptually vacuous and empirically redundant. It is certainly not by performing arbitrary mathematical manipulations and endowing the objects of introspection with contagious properties that will improve the status of a partial and misleading metaphor. As Gatherer notes, the thought contagion metaphor persists largely because of what could charitably be called a `disregard' for linguistics and cognitive science. To this I would add a dangerous `disregard' for the corpus of social science in general

Replicators - the fundamental units of any process of natural selection - were first defined by evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins as any entities of which copies are made. The concept of replicators has diverse applications in a variety of areas, including biology, sociology, linguistics, and philosophy. The site uses an interactive, hands-on style of instruction to engage visitors in an active process of learning and retaining information. Interactive demonstrations that are both entertaining and informative are used and integrated to reinforce major concepts and enrich traditional text-based education. Visitors are encouraged not only to investigate our demonstrations, but also to become part of our community by sharing their thoughts and opinions with other visitors.

MEMETICS
The Science of Information Viruses
By Keith Henson
Nancho Advisory: While this treatment focuses on the pathological "viral" aspects of ideas, it might be helpful to also keep in mind their adaptive gene-like functions. Conventional wisdom implies that, like germs and Indians, the only good virus is a dead one. Yet we know that memes like liberty, democracy, small-is-beautiful, et salubrious cetera have played an actively benevolent role in human social evolution. To inoculate the earth against the abusive ideas traced below we may have to set a meme to catch (and supplant) a meme...
We don't have a science of social prediction. Until recently we haven't even had much in the way of theories. Our continual surprise at the development of cults, religions, wars, fads, and other social movements is a notable exception to the steady progress humans have made in building better models of our environment. Our lack of good models must be considered a major deficiency. A successful theory for the development of social movements will have to provide a unifying theory for events that make up much of the evening news. It will have to discover common features that lie behind the diverse trends causing problems in Nicaragua, South Africa, Northern Ireland and the Middle East. It should be able to produce a plausible model for the breakup of the Rajneesh cult. The theory should be able to predict the conditions under which Turkey will be subverted by a fundamentalist version of Islam similar to that which has led to so much grief in Iran.

What Would Memetics Look Like?
The name “memetics”, by analogy with “genetics”, refers to a science, the scientific study of memes. However, the mere fact that we have a name for something doesn't necessarily mean that the thing exists (unicorn!), and I'm going to claim that memetics is one of those nonexistent things. I've seen memetics described in many places as an existing science, but I've never seen anything that I'd call a science. In fact, to my mind, the present state of affairs looks like introductory psychology minus the experimental backing … a sorry state indeed. On the other hand, just because memetics doesn't exist now doesn't mean that it won't exist in the future. So, what I'd like to do here is speculate about what a science of memetics might look like. First of all, memetics ought to incorporate the evolutionary aspects of genetics, of course … that's the whole point of the analogy between genes and memes. Next, although I've argued that

Introduction The term meme was coined by Professor Richard Dawkins in his 1976 book "The Selfish Gene". He was referring to the way in which Darwinian natural selection was equally capable of describing how ideas can propagate as it is for describing how genes propagate. It is a nice irony that the term 'meme' itself provides an excellent example of memetic propagation. Since 1976 the 'meme meme' has spread far and wide to the extent it is now part of the English language. It's now generally used to refer to a "a transmissable unit of cultural information". But this shorthand definition only tells half the story, memes are more subtle than that. In this document, I'll explain what a meme is, and what a meme isn't. We'll get back to basics with the Darwinian principles Dawkins had in mind when he first thought of the concept, and see how these principles might be rather useful in the context of knowledge management.
