Despite great strides in science and technology, the modern world continues to be plagued
by war and social conflicts. A growing number of institutions of higher education have come to
the conclusion that just as we have service academies to educate young people in the ways
of war, we need Peace Studies programs to train students how to work toward the peaceful
solution of world problems. More than 200 university level Peace Studies programs have emerged across the United States.
Champman, at the forefront of this movement is among the relatively few programs to offer a full
scale academic major in this new field. The Chapman Peace Studies Program is premised on the
belief that peace implies more than just the absence of war. Positive peace involves social justice

    1. Peace Studies at FAU
The certificate program in Peace Studies at FAU provides students with an opportunity to explore the field of peace studies with an interdisciplinary perspective. The Peace Studies Certificate is open to all degree-seeking students, and is designed to be taken concurrently with a major.
The goal of the Peace Studies Certificate is to educate students on the various causes of conflict and obstacles to peace. Courses offered within the program address the concept of peace from different perspectives, underscoring the complexities of the concept of peace and the difficulties achieving it on both a global and local level. To reflect this complexity and address student interests, individual students can tailor-make their program curriculum in consultation with the Director by choosing from a list of courses offered by a number of different departments.

    http://www.peace.unt.edu/
University of North Texas Peace Studies Homepage Last updated January 28, 2003 Peace Studies is an interdisciplinary field focusing on the questions of why violence occurs and how conflicts may be resolved or settled short of violence. Because violence often occurs as a result of conflicts related to economic and social inequalities, issues of justice are also considered a key component of the Peace Studies field.
Undergraduate programs in Peace Studies have been around since after World War II. The University of North Texas joins more than 200 colleges and universities nationwide in offering Peace Studies. However, the Peace Studies Program at UNT is unique in that there are no other programs in Texas or the Southwest offering an undergraduate major or minor in Peace Studies.
An interdisciplinary minor in this growing field allows students to adjust their course work to best fit their major field. With Peace Studies courses in Political Science, Anthropology, Communications, Economics, History, and Sociology, a minor in Peace Studies is a perfect supplement to any undergraduate education.
There are a number of options Peace Studies graduates can pursue, such as a career in the foreign service; in an international organization; in international or human-rights law; in corporations that invest overseas; or in non-governmental organizations working in human rights, development, environmental protection, or conflict resolution.
