This amazing Festival is a celebration of diversity. 7000+ guests join the Festival Board and volunteers on the RMC Green to sing, dance, and sample the ethnic delicacies. The two phrases "our community" and "Festival of Cultures" are synonymous on this day. A full year of meeting and planning and learning precedes each Festival. This working Board brings new, fresh ideas to the Festival each year. They remember both the extended family and the entire community as they plan activities, entertainment, and layout. This event is open to anyone at no cost for attendance, performances, and children's activities. Festival 2002 is June 9th, 10am - 5pm.

RUSSIAN FARMING - A NEW DAY

Our work with the farmers in Southern Siberia has evolved into an electronic bridge that facilitates the exchange of farming ideas and current technologies. Our partners in the Kuzbass send questions and the Institute's professional consultants then respond through our Russian interpreters. The exchange is quite specific to the needs expressed and is proving to be a valuable "connection." The information is reprinted and distributed in Russia for use by the area's private farmers. As they gain experience and as the Russian economy stabilizes, this program is winding to a close.

The Nature of Peace Studies Peace Studies at Manhattan College is a interdisciplinary academic program that examines the following problem/opportunity areas:
  • Arms Races and War Economic, Political, and Social Justice Conflict Creation, Management, and Resolution Nonviolent Philosophies and Strategies of Resistance World Community and World Government
The courses are taught by faculty members from fourteen disciplines and several Schools of the College. Faculty are drawn from the physical and life sciences, the social sciences, the applied sciences, and the humanities. Teaching and research examine "negative" peace - dysfunctional human cultural, social, and economic organization - and "positive" peace - successful human enterprises that result in justice, harmony, and reconciliation. Manhattan College offers Peace Studies as a major or minor field of study leading to the B.A. degree, and as a Certificate program for those who have already earned a bachelor's degree. Many students interested in Peace Studies pair it with another academic discipline, and complete a double major. Peace Studies is housed in the School of Arts, but is also available as a minor for the students in the School of Science, Business, and Engineering, and as a second concentration in the School of Education. Requirements : Students wishing to major in Peace Studies must take 30 credits in three categories: seminars 201 and 401 (six credits); elective courses (twenty-one credits); field work (three or six credits). In the senior year a thesis is encouraged through the completion of Peace Studies 422. Students minoring in Peace Studies must take 15 credits, chosen under the advisement of the Director. For a certificate in Peace Studies, a student must take 15 credits, chosen in consultation with the Director. A minimum grade of C is required for course credit toward the minor.

Program and Concentration
The Peace Studies Program is concerned with analyzing the alternative ways that may be used to transform individual behavior, national policy, and human institutions in order to promote peace and justice in the world. The program promotes discussion and study on issues of conflict and its management, within the lives of individuals, societies, and the world at large. It sponsors research on meditation, mediation, negotiation, and ways to reduce violence, build diverse communities, and use nonviolent action to defend human rights and promote justice. Undergraduates may concentrate in peace studies to complement any major. Students may also design a major in peace studies via the University’s self-designed major. The concentration draws together the knowledge of several disciplines in the context of the search for peace, while enhancing students’ critical thinking skills and awareness of the connections between local and global issues. Departments and programs represented in peace studies include economics, government, history, international development, philosophy, psychology, and sociology.

Martin Hebert, Coordinator The goal of the Bi-College concentration is to help focus students' coursework around specific areas of interest central to Peace and Conflict Studies. The concentration is composed of a six-course cluster, centering around conflict and cooperation within and between nations. Of these six courses up to three may also count towards the fulfillment of the student's major. Peace and Conflict Studies draws upon the long-standing interest in war, conflict and peacemaking and social justice, as well as questions associated with the fields of anthropology, history, political science, social psychology, economics and sociology. It draws on these fields for theoretical understandings of matters such as bargaining, internal causes of conflict, cooperative and competitive strategies of negotiation, intergroup relations, and the role of institutions in conflict management. A student meets with the Coordinator (in the spring of the sophomore year) to work out a plan for the concentration. All concentrators are required to take three core courses: (1) the introduction to Peace and Conflict Studies (GNPR 111a) (2) either Cross-Cultural Conflict and Conflict Management (POLS 206), or Managing Conflicts in Nations and Organizations (POL 247), and, finally (3) Advanced Issues in Peace and Conflict Studies (POLS 347). It is advised that concentrators complete at least two of three courses by the end of their junior year.

Department of Peace Initiative Most peace activism is reactive: we wait until War's imminence, then protest. This approach is bad because:
  • by that point it may be too late
  • protest perpetuates confrontation, antagonism, hostility, indignance, and self-righteousnessthe very negative energies that produce war
A new paradigm is needed: to proactively address the causes of wars. United States Congressman Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio) introduced H.R. 2459, a bill to create a Cabinet-level Department of Peace. The Department of Peace would promote non-violence as an organizing principle in our society and help create the conditions of a more peaceful world. The Department of Peace would be part of the Executive Branch and exist on a co-equal basis with other Cabinet Departments such as the Department of Defense and the Department of the Interior. We have tended to pessimism (and with cause) about the United States government. But recall that our country, the oldest modern democracy, was founded by idealists. They saw our mission as to create a model for a free and just society. This mission endures, and all that is required is for you, a citizen of the United States, to decide to act to make it so.

Interdepartmental Courses in Peace Studies ("Global Militarism and Human Survival," "Violence: Sources and Alternatives"), as well as courses in the various departments and schools of the University, may be combined in numerous ways in order to constitute a major. Students in Peace Studies take twelve courses of their choosing in that area, characteristically from departments such as history, anthropology, political science, sociology, economics, geography, philosophy and family studies, though by no means limited to those. The Peace Studies curriculum is coordinated by the UConn Council on Peace Education, appointed by the Vice President for Academic Affairs to promote projects relating to Peace Education at the University. Over 300 colleges and universities nationwide currently offer courses in the field of Peace Studies. Many offer minors or majors in Peace Studies and some, such as Syracuse, also offer graduate programs. Undergraduate programs also exist at such institutions as UCLA, UC Berkeley, Columbia, Penn State, Pittsburgh, Missouri, Princeton, Tufts, Brandeis, and the Five College Consortium at Amherst, MA.

The Justice and Peace Studies Program at the University of St. Thomas is an interdisciplinary program designed to prepare students to be responsible critics of contemporary societies and effective agents for positive social transformation. The two core courses for the minor, and the pattern of requirements for the major, make use of four stages (the "Circle of Praxis" ): (1) experience (actual and vicarious) of poverty and injustice; (2) descriptive analysis (study of the economic, political, and social realities of a culture, and the historical events that produced those realities); (3) normative analysis (moral judgment on existing society, study of alternative possibilities for that society, and analysis of the moral values at stake); and (4) action possibilities (Strategies and skills for transforming society from its present condition to a better condition including a variety of strategies such as those outlined in the "Social Change Wheel"). While the two core courses for the minor integrate all four of these stages, JPST 250 concentrates on descriptive analysis and THEO 305 concentrates on normative analysis. The additional three core courses for the major, JPST 450, 470, and 472 concentrate on action possibilities.

Johnston, Kepnes, Knecht, McCabe, Moran, Pinet, Pitcher, Ries Rotter, Stevens, Thie, Walters, Weinberg, N. Young (Director) The Peace Studies Program at Colgate was established in 1970 as part of a university-wide response to issues raised by the scourge of twentieth-century war and genocide and the challenges of peacemaking. The purpose of the program is to develop a rigorous and intellectually responsible approach to the issues of war and peace, conflict and social change, violence and nonviolence. The program uses the specialized research in the interdisciplinary field of peace studies as well as relevant work in the traditional social sciences and other disciplines to understand obstacles to world peace and possible solutions. It also explores direct, practical approaches to confronting the real conflict situations that threaten peace. The concentration can begin in the first year with introductory courses coordinated by the director and taught by the peace studies staff. A number of other required and recommended courses follow and are described below.

About the Program [Back to Top]
The Peace Studies Program offers students the opportunity to study, systematically, the problem of peacewhat it means and how it is achieved. Interdisciplinary in its orientation, peace studies encourages students to approach the problem of peace from a variety of viewpoints. The focus of the program is threefold: it addresses the conditions that give rise to violence and how to prevent them; the conditions that constitute alternatives to violence and how to promote them; and the strategies for achieving peace in its various forms. The peace studies minor is available to university undergraduate students. There are no requirements for admission to the program. Graduate students who want to concentrate on peace studies should contact a member of the steering committee. Most 400-level courses, including courses numbered 407 and 410, are offered for graduate credit under 500-level numbers.
Minor Requirements
The interdisciplinary minor in peace studies requires a minimum of 32 credits, 15 of which must be upper division. A grade of mid-C or better must be earned in each of the eight courses taken to fulfill requirements for the peace studies minor. Course requirements consist of three core courses and five elective courses selected from the three groups listed below.

My interest in peace studies derives especially from Of my books, the following areconcerned with aspects of peace studies David P. Barash and Charles Webel.
http://faculty.washington.edu/dpbarash/peace.html
My interest in Peace Studies derives especially from two sources: (1) a longstanding concern about nuclear weapons and the psychology and doctrine surrounding them, and (2) the implications of biological factors - including but not limited to questions of "innate" human aggressiveness - in producing and sometimes restraining individual as well as group violence. I have also dealt with questions concerning deterrence theory as well as specific weapons-related matters, such as Star Wars, and Gandhian nonviolence.
Of my books, the following are concerned with aspects of Peace Studies:
