  • Recreation and leisure is the largest industry in the world, and professionals in that industry from coaches to program administrators help people use their leisure time better by matching them with available resources. Professionals in this field provide an important social service, particularly when they help injured and disabled clients get the therapy they need to lead fuller lives. Many Southern graduates work in nursing homes and rehabilitation facilities, helping people with dementia, autism, or behavioral problems. Other careers are in city parks and recreation departments, community agencies like the YMCA and Boys and Girls Clubs, and commercial organizations like camps and ski resorts. The work graduates do varies widely, from sports instruction to developing better therapeutic programs to managing a busy office in the recreation industry. For example, one recent Southern graduate is now the recreation supervisor for the city of Bloomfield's (Connecticut) parks department. Another is the recreation director at a veterans' hospital.

RECREATION AND LEISURE STUDIES Career Monograph GENERAL DESCRIPTION AND QUALIFICATIONS The recreation and leisure service field includes people who assume programming, management and supervisory positions in agencies and organizations responsible for planning, organizing and directing individuals or groups in the pursuit of leisure activities. Recreation professionals may work in rural, suburban, or urban settings with people of varied ages and socioeconomic status. Specialists also work with the disabled in clinical, residential and community settings. Major career areas include recreation program services, park and natural resource management, employee services, commercial recreation, youth services, volunteer services, travel and tourism, and therapeutic recreation. The ability to work well with people and motivate them is one basic qualification necessary for all employees in the recreation and leisure service field. Creativity, leadership skills, decision-making ability, good health, and physical stamina are also necessary qualities. A flexible attitude towards one's work schedule is also required, as some positions include evening and weekend hours. Entry-level positions in recreation require a bachelor's degree. Most positions in therapeutic recreation require state and national certification. Administrative positions are competitive, and may require graduate course work. Full-time college and university faculty positions require a doctorate degree.
