Graduate Programs in Recreation and Leisure Studies
Graduate Coordinator: Dr. Maureen Glancy
The master's program is designed to meet early and advanced professional development needs through individually advised study opportunities. Specialized graduate studies are offered in management and in therapeutic recreation. Students are admitted to the program in fall and spring semesters. University requirements for admission must be fully met by all applicants. No graduate entry exam is required. Departmental admission information and application materials are available on request.
General Requirements for Admission
Applicants to the graduate program must complete the department background information form, provide three appropriate letters of reference supporting capability to perform in a graduate program for professional advancement and furnish transcripts from all institutions of higher education previously attended. Criteria for admission include an overall grade point average of 2.5 and an upper division grade point average of 3.0. Evidence must be provided of potential ability to develop expert knowledge and advanced skill needed to engage in the professional field of practice and/or continuing study in a doctoral program.
Requirements for Admission to Classified Standing
Applicants having met the general requirements for admission to the program with an earned BS or BA in Recreation and satisfactory completion of a lower-division statistics course are eligible to apply for acceptance with classified standing. Applicants with earned degrees in a closely related field (e.g. tourism) may request admission to classified standing, dependent upon review of the prior course of study.

The mission of the Recreation and Leisure Studies (RLS) Program is to facilitate the professional preparation of students interested in pursuing and/or continuing a career in recreation and leisure services. The RLS curriculum provides recreational management skills that are applicable to therapeutic recreation, outdoor recreation, tourism and commercial recreation, and public and military recreation service settings.

Why Select San Jose State University? San Jose State University is located within Santa Clara County, 60 miles south of San Francisco and 75 miles north of beautiful Carmel by the Sea and the Monterey peninsula. The full and part-time faculty in the Department of Recreation and Leisure Studies have diverse backgrounds in leisure service and career fields. The program within the Department of Recreation and Leisure Studies is accredited by the National Recreation and Park Association in cooperation with the American Association for Leisure and Recreation. Various scholarships are available for Recreation and Leisure Studies majors. Professional Preparation The baccalaureate degree, with few exceptions, is a requirement for entry-level positions in public, private, and commercial leisure service agencies. Leisure has become an increasingly critical aspect of society as people seek ways to integrate it into all facets of their daily lives. Multiple options are available to individuals desiring careers in a profession in which worthwhile goals exist, such as the enhancement of the quality of community life and the provision of opportunities which facilitate achievement of healthy, aesthetic, satisfying and challenging leisure experiences.

    Recreation Administration and Leisure Studies The Program offers a Bachelor of Science degree in Recreation Administration for individuals committed to the recreation and leisure services profession.
