Welcome to the website of the Canadian Association for Leisure Studies (CALS) , an organization of Canadian and international scholars and practitioners who share an interest in recreation and leisure research and the delivery of leisure services, and who meet once every three years at the Canadian Congress on Leisure Research The CALS website provides you with information about the Association and its activities. You will also find links to Canadian sites associated with the field of recreation and leisure studies, of both an academic and an applied nature.
CALS Background and Functions
CALS was founded at the Third Canadian Congress on Leisure Research, held at the University of Alberta in 1981. Tim Burton, a two-time President of CALS, has written a brief history of the Association. Membership in CALS is automatically awarded to everyone who attends a Canadian Congress on Leisure Research, although other membership arrangements are possible. Leisure/Loisir, Journal of the Canadian Association for Leisure Studies has recently begun publication. This is not a new journal, but a new name for a journal that has gone through three evolutionary phases. It was first issued in the 1970s under the title

Admission requirements Students must meet the general requirements of the Toulouse School of Graduate Studies, in addition to the following program requirements.
Degree requirements The M.S. with a major in recreation and leisure studies is a 36-hour degree program. All students take 15 hours of core courses, 9 hours of electives in either program management or therapeutic recreation, and 6 to 9 hours in a minor area. Students who select the therapeutic recreation electives may be required to complete additional certification courses prior to graduation from the program. Students without experience or course work in recreation may be required to complete 9 hours of corequisite courses and RECR 5860, Practicum in Leisure Services, to meet program and certification requirements.

The 21st century brings many new opportunities and challenges for Park and Recreation professionals in providing for a better quality of life. Depending upon your interests, skills and ambitions, you could be working at a local park and recreation department; a state or national park; with a non-profit agency such as YMCA/YWCA, 4H, or Scouting program; in tourism or at a resort; in an outdoor recreation/education or camp program; or in therapeutic recreation serving individuals with specific health-related needs and disabilities. The department offers an accredited B.S. degree and a M.S. degree in Recreation and Park Administration. Students and faculty are engaged in classroom instruction, service learning projects, grant writing, and research. The faculty is committed and strongly believe in providing a combination of theory and experience to prepare and motivate students for successful employment in the field. The B.S. degree provides 11 credit hours of direct hands-on field experience. The senior practicum serves as an excellent transition from school to work and many students are hired directly out of their practicum.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION The department offers a BS in Recreation Administration with concentrations in Recreation and Park Management and Therapeutic Recreation. Courses focus on an understanding of leisure and the effective use of human and material resources to provide recreation, park and leisure services and facilities for a wide variety of populations and settings. The Recreation and Park Management Concentration allows students flexibility in the selection of courses in the areas of: Commercial Recreation, Tourism, and Hospitality Management Students are prepared for positions in enterprises which offer leisure services and/or products for a profit. Examples include clubs and spas, resorts, ski areas, theme parks and the hospitality industry. Community Recreation Management Students are prepared for positions which involve planning, implementing, managing and evaluating comprehensive recreation programs in public, nonprofit, and private settings.
