T he Religious Studies major has been offered at Alma College for over 100 years. Students who have completed its requirements have gone on to careers in ministry, Christian education, social work, counseling, communication, teaching, business, and law. Many of our graduates have continued their studies in graduate schools or seminaries. In recent years, a number of students have chosen to make Religious Studies their second major or minor to accompany and complement other majors. We welcome these double majors and believe they achieve an even better liberal arts education by joining other areas of study with Religious Studies. R eligious Studies examines the way a person or community makes sense out of life (world views) and the way a pers on or community acts out and lives in a world view (life styles). The study of religion includes
exploration of the nature and meaning of the religious dimensions of human experience;

The study of theology and religion raises questions which are central to all cultures. Who am I? What is the purpose of life? Is there a God? What forms does religious experience take today? How may the validity of religious experience be assessed? What is the connection between religious beliefs and personal conduct? To what extent and in what ways may the writings of religious thinkers in earlier centuries and in non-western cultures be appropriated today? The Department of Theology and Religious Studies is one of the largest and most diverse in the country. We are proud of the very wide range of optional subjects we are able to offer. King's is the main centre of teaching theology and religion within the University of London. We have 20 full-time teaching staff, together with several part-time teachers and research fellows. The Department recently celebrated its 150th Anniversary. April 2002 S Williams Last modified: Wednesday 7th January 2003 by: Sarah Williams

Introduction to the Department of Religious Studies
Welcome to the Department of Religious Studies at CSU, Chico. Religious Studies is an interdisciplinary field that examines religious ideas, symbols, practices, and institutions from the perspectives of history, textual studies, philosophy, anthropology, sociology, psychology, and other disciplines. Our program is cross-cultural and comparative, and highlights the complex relationship of religion to other areas of culture. In addition to courses exploring the development of all the major religious traditions of the world, we offer courses that probe the role of religion in ethics and law, gender constructs, literature, the visual arts, and a variety of contemporary social and political issues.
The Department has grown from its modest beginnings in 1974 to a Department of 13 active scholars working in many areas of the discipline. We offer programs of study leading to a BA or minor in Religious Studies, and a minor in Ethics. Browse our website for information on courses, faculty, on- and off-campus resources, and information about careers and graduate school in Religious Studies.
