WHAT IS STS?
STS has come to recognise science and technology as neither wholly autonomous juggernauts nor simply neutral tools ready for any ulitisation whatsoever. Instead, science and technology are ... perceived as value-laden social processes taking place in specific historical contexts shaped by, and in turn shaping, the human values reflected in cultural, political, and economic institutions. Such a view does not deny the constraints imposed by nature or the physical reality of technological artifacts, but it odes insist that our knowledge and understanding of nature, of science, and of technology are socially mediated processes. It is toward just such a holistic and interdisciplinary understanding, coupled with the hope that society will be better able to shape and control its science and technology as a result, that STS aims... Academics STU Home Minor Major Academics STU Home Minor Major ... Contact Us This programme examines science and technology from the perspectives of the humanities and the social sciences. This approach includes an examination along historical, ethical, social, legal and environmental dimensions. The first-year course, Introduction to Scientific Reasoning, is designed to prepare students to understand and evaluate scientific and mathematical information contained in news reports, magazines, scientific journals and in other University courses. It will introduce you to such key elements in the conceptual framework of science as theories, mathematical models, hypotheses, predictions and testing. Also available at the first-year level is the course Science, Technology and the Environment which explores such topics as: the human genome project, the effects of pollution and human development on bird migration, the effectiveness of the polygraph as it is used to detect lies, and the nature of scientific research in the Antarctic. The aim of this course is to prepare students to enter the debate over key issues by introducing them to the scientific research and mathematical models relevant to each topic. St. Thomas offers a major in Science and Technology Studies.

“Introduction to Science and Technology Studies” is, as the title suggests, a first course in science and technology studies. Contrary to the description in the university catalog, it is not a “writing” course. True, you will get a lot of practice in writing in this course. And, yes, you will be graded, in part, on the quality of your writing. So writing is important in this course. But it ought to be important in any college class, and it definitely will be in any other science and technology course that you take here at Lyman Briggs. For instance, the students in my upper-division courses usually write

Newsletter Update 11/2000 Call for Papers Institute of Railway Studies, UK and Heritage Railway Association, UK 31 December 2000 From September 2001 through May 2003, Rutgers’ new doctoral program in the History of Technology, Environment and Health The Center for the History of Business, Technology and Society invites paper proposals for the conference, "Commodifying Everything: Consumption and Capitalist Enterprise" at the Hagley Museum and Library in Wilmington, Delaware on 12-13 October 2001. Paper proposals should focus on historical processes of commodification since c. 1700, especially the spread of the market to new areas of social and material life and the spatial dispersion of consumption on a market model throughout the world. They encourage a broad definition of consumption that encompasses material goods, experience, services, and information, and we hope to stimulate interaction among scholars exploring these aspects of consumption. Proposals may consider themes such as identity, performance, and design if they connect to issues of market relations. Proposals are due by 16 February 2001 and should include an abstract of no more than 500 words and a brief c.v. Funds may be available to support travel to the conference by speakers. Please direct proposals and queries to: Roger Horowitz, Associate Director, Center for the History of Business, Technology, and Society, Hagley Museum and Library, P.O.Box 3630, Wilmington, DE 19807, email: rh@udel.edu; More information is available on the web page at http://www.hagley.org

You are visitor number since October 3, 1996. The Societal Dimensions of Engineering, Science, and Technology (SDEST) program folds together two former NSF programs, Ethics and Values Studies , and Research on Science and Technology , in the Division of Social, Behavioral and Economic Research of the National Science Foundation . EVS was originally called Ethics and Values in Science and Technology (EVIST). SDEST is the only U.S. government program that regularly seeks proposals and regularly funds projects in environmental ethics. In SDEST , the Ethics and Values Studies (EVS) component focuses on developing and transmitting knowledge about ethical and value dimensions associated with the conduct and impacts of science, engineering, and technology. The Research on Science and Technology (RST) component supports research to improve approaches and information for decision making concerning management and direction of research, science and technology.

Reframing Rights: Constitutional Implications of Technological Change This doctoral and postdoctoral training program, supported by a grant from the US National Science Foundation, offers a yearlong opportunity for study and research at the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs within Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. The program focuses on the evolution of constitutional rights in relation to changes in science and technology, particularly in the areas of genetics, information, and the environment. Applications are encouraged from students and recent Ph.D.’s in science and technology studies, law, and related fields who wish to investigate how scientific knowledge and technological artifacts engage with and reshape our perception of rights: for instance, by redrawing the boundary between human and non-human, be altering fundamental notions of identify, and by challenging settled expectations of privacy and autonomy. Research may focus on such topics as changing biological and legal concepts of personhood, the origins and transformation of intellectual property rights, and technology and privacy. Fellows supported by the program will conduct their studies in a challenging interdisciplinary environment under the guidance of experienced scholars in science and technology studies, history of science, public policy, health and environmental studies, ethics, and law.
