Before Freud the natural and normal goal of sexual desire was reproduction. William Acton used sexuality and reproduction as synonyms in his influential Functions and Disorders of the Reproductive System. He treated youthful sexual feelings and masturbation as clinical disorders. Freud's notion of a sexual instinct was unrelated to reproduction . It developed in normal children from the pleasure they took in breast feeding, to the anal pleasure reflected in jokes about feces, to the pleasure derived from genital stimulation. The sexual instinct, then, was not meant so much for reproduction as individual gratification. Freud's influence led to the systematic study and an expanded concept of sexuality. In his Psychopathia Sexualis, Krafft-Ebbing focused on degenerate perversity and cataloged what he considered the perverse sexual acts. But in his famous Studies in the Psychology of Sex, Havelock Ellis used what Kraft-Ebbing called perversity to reach a new understanding of sexuality. He wanted to extend the range of normal, acceptable sexual experience.

Today many of us accept that our sexual orientation is rather like Protestantism, pre-destined. It is decided long before we are born, and although environment might put the finishing touches to our ultimate sexual choices, it is biology that makes us who we are. This widely accepted view of sexual orientation has its roots in the late nineteenth-century. German speaking sexual commentators like Krafft-Ebing and Hirshfeld were among the first to seriously attempt an understanding of this most subjective of human characteristics. Their pioneering studies are the basis of our present-day view of sexuality. An in-depth study on sexual culture and science is now available to read here on-line. Psychology, sexology, and the deadened sense of sin
An unpopular truth
Ever since the 1960s, the Roman Catholic hierarchy has tried to make taboo the notion that changes imposed on the Church, as a consequence of the Vatican II Council, paved the way for religious confusion and turmoil. Protestants, who were sympathetic supporters of the Church, looked on in bewilderment, as religious garb was disposed of, fasting days eliminated, and other traditions were minimized. Some of us wondered where Catholics thought all these innovations would lead. Sometimes, Church leaders even ostracized their own prelates and other devout Catholics, who held to the traditional disciplines of the Church and warned of the inevitable negatives that greater secularization would bring. Tuesday, January 16, 2001 U professor receives award for achievements in sexology Melinda Rogers Staff Reporter Many researchers work tirelessly throughout their careers, hoping to be recognized for an important contribution to their field of study. While few ever receive the honors they dream of, one University professor recently received an award that exceeded even his own expectations of success. Dr. Eli Coleman, University professor and world-renowned expert in issues of human sexuality, was awarded the Distinguished Scientific Achievement Award for outstanding contributions to the field of sexology Nov. 12 in Orlando, Fla. Coleman has been working in the field of sexology for more than 20 years and is one of the most highly regarded experts on issues of sexual orientation, gender dysphoria, chemical dependency, compulsive sexual behavior and sexual offenders. "I was in disbelief (to receive the award). Just to be in the company of the kind of people that have received this award before ... I was stunned," Coleman said.

At the XIII World Congress of Sexology in Valencia, Spain, June 1997, the following declaration was approved. See also the World Association for Sexology
Valencia Declaration on Sexual Rights
We, the participants of the XIII World Congress of Sexology, declare that: Sexuality is a changing and dynamic dimension of humanity. It is constructed through the interaction between the individual and social structures. It is present throughout the life cycle, harmonizing identity and creating and /or strengthening interpersonal bonds.
Sexual pleasure, including autoeroticism, is a source of physical, psychological, intellectual and spiritual well-being. It is associated with a conflict-free and anxiety-free experience of sexuality, allowing, therefore, social and personal development. We hereby urge that societies create the conditions to satisfy the needs for the full development of the individual and respect the following SEXUAL RIGHTS:
  • The right to freedom , which excludes all forms of sexual coercion, exploitation and abuse at any time and in all situations in life. The struggle against violence is a social priority. All children should be desired and loved.

Paper NSA $18.00tx 0-226-05667-8 Fall 1998 The key founders of sexology, the "science of desire," were Havelock Ellis, Richard von Krafft-Ebing, and Magnus Hirschfeld. This volume examines the impact of their writings on English-speaking culture from the 1880s to the early 1940s. How influential a field was sexology during this period, and how much power did sexologists wield? What was the impact of their work on popular and official attitudes to sex? Lucy Bland and Laura Doan have brought together leading historians of sex, cultural and literary critics, and scholars in gay, lesbian, and queer studies, to reassess current debates on sexology in light of its history. They address issues such as the relation of "sexual science" to the law, government policy, journalism, eugenics programs, marriage and sex manuals, and literary representation. They also map out new readings of transsexuality and bisexuality, and the centrality of race within sexology. Sexology in Culture and its companion Sexology Uncensored will interest all those concerned with understanding modern sexual discourse in its historical context.

The early pioneers of the new field of sexology examined and classified sexual behaviors, identities, and relations. For years much of the material here has been "censored" in the sense that it is difficult to obtain, subject to restrictive circulation, or available only in medical archives. The extracts (which date from the 1880s to the 1940s) cover a variety of topics including gender and sexual difference; homosexuality; transsexuality and bisexuality; heterosexuality; marriage and sex manuals; reproductive control; eugenics; race; and various sexual proclivities.
