Gateways to Social Work/Welfare on the Net
Practice wisdom to go By Ed H. Summers G iven its currency and potential for interactivity, the Internet is a particularly useful tool for students of social work. Much of the success of social workers has been attributed to acquired "practice wisdom," which is the body of knowledge obtained through the actual experience of doing social work. The Internet is an ideal environment for students to observe practicing social workers, while keeping abreast of current developments in social policy and practice. However, social work is a multifaceted discipline with many areas of specialization: addictions, aging, children, disabilities, education, health, mental illness, and occupational services. Understandably, a thorough guide to Internet resources of potential interest would far exceed the space available here. This guide aims to briefly introduce some excellent gateways to social work information on the net, while providing links to social work organizations, e-journals, and education/employment resources. What is Forensic Social Work?
Forensic social work is the application of social work to questions and issues relating to law and legal systems. This specialty of our profession goes far beyond clinics and psychiatric hospitals for criminal defendants being evaluated and treated on issues of competency and responsibility. A broader definition includes social work practice which in any way is related to legal issues and litigation, both criminal and civil. Child custody issues, involving separation, divorce, neglect, termination of parental rights, the implications of child and spouse abuse, juvenile and adult justice services, corrections, and mandated treatment all fall under this definition.
Can any social worker be a forensic social worker?

As the societies of the world become increasingly interdependent and as our own society continues to confront the problems of pluralism and rapid social change, success in many fields (including international development, business, government and education) will depend on the individual's understanding of, and ability to adapt to, varied aspects of human diversity. The programs in the Department of Sociology and Social Work equip the student with the tools necessary for such an understanding. ClientTouch has two main objectives: To make it easier to serve clients (by having client data at your fingertips), and to make it easier to report demographic and service statistics to funding sources. ClientTouch comes in two main varieties: ClientTouch Classic, and ClientTouch SE (Simple Edition). Both varieties keep data on each client, including demographic data, case notes, program enrollments, services you provided, and outcomes achieved. In general, ClientTouch SE is easier to use and less expensive than ClientTouch Classic. (The base software is free.) However, ClientTouch Classic keeps more detailed data on each client.
