http://www.ssw.umich.edu/trapped/
Welcome! The Project for Research on Welfare, Work, and Domestic Violence mourns the October 25, 2002 deaths of Sheila and Paul Wellstone in an airplane crash in northern Minnesota. The Wellstones' tireless advocacy and fervent commitment to battered women on welfare is irreplaceable. In their memory we rededicate ourselves to the cause that the Wellstones devoted their lives - the right of all persons to experience lives of personal fulfillment, free from violence and poverty. Audio of Senator Wellstone's presentation at the 1999 conference. The joint Project for Research on Welfare, Work, and Domestic Violence seeks to foster collaboration among researchers, policy makers, and community organizations which are concerned with the nexus of welfare and domestic violence issues. The Project provides national coordination of research and public education on the relationship of domestic violence to poverty and welfare use. The project is a collaborative project of the Center for Impact Research (Formerly the Taylor Institute) and the University of Michigan School of Social Work.

    • While a bachelor's degree is the minimum requirement, a master's degree in social work or a related field has become the standard for many positions. Employment is projected to grow faster than average. Competition for jobs is expected in cities, but opportunities should be good in rural areas.

Nature of the Work About this section Back to Top Social work is a profession for those with a strong desire to help improve people's lives. Social workers help people function the best way they can in their environment, deal with their relationships, and solve personal and family problems. Social workers often see clients who face a life-threatening disease or a social problem. These problems may include inadequate housing, unemployment, lack of job skills, financial distress, serious illness or disability, substance abuse, unwanted pregnancy, or anti-social behavior. Social workers also assist families that have serious domestic conflicts, including those involving child or spousal abuse. Through direct counseling, social workers help clients identify their concerns, consider effective solutions, and find reliable resources. Social workers typically consult and counsel clients and arrange for services that can help them. Often, they refer clients to specialists in services such as debt counseling, childcare or eldercare, public assistance, or alcohol or drug rehabilitation. Social workers then follow through with the client to assure that services are helpful and that clients make proper use of the services offered. Social workers may review eligibility requirements, help fill out forms and applications, visit clients on a regular basis, and provide support during crises.

    Critical Social Work
offers the opportunity for constructive dialogue in the interest of achieving social justice. We recognize the historical nature of both human capability and social justice. With such recognition, we do not attempt a definitive definition of either. In part the goal of Critical Social Work is to assist us collectively in recognizing the current potentials for social justice as well as the future possibilities. Further, we recognize that a contemporary definition of social justicemust deal with the issues of legal, moral, and economic obligation of both the individual and the collective. We propose that through dialogue there exists the possibility of refining our ideas about the individual and community, clarifying the relationship between interpersonal relations and institutional structures, and identifying actions that promote both individual and community well-being. To this end Critical Social Work strives, for this is surely critical social work, that is, activity directed toward establishing essential judgments in constructing a sustaining context for conviviality.
