Alpine Skiing Alpine skiing is an exciting winter sport that challenges the athlete's downhill racing ability and coordination. Some Special Olympics Alpine skiing athletes may reach speeds of up to 64 kilometers per hour as they ski down a mountain. Alpine skiing was first introduced as an Official Special Olympics Winter Sport at the First International Special Olympics Winter Games in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, USA. Since those Games, the number of athletes competing in Special Olympics Alpine skiing has grown by 300 percent. Today, it is estimated that there are 9,785 athletes competing in Alpines skiing throughout 50 countries.
WORLD GAMES HISTORY
The 1997 Special Olympics World Winter Games in Ontario, Canada, provided the stage for more than 300 athletes to compete in Alpine skiing events. The 2001 Special Olympics World Winter Games was the largest event ever held in the state of Alaska and the first and largest event to take place in the millennium. This event hosted 1,800 athletes from 80 countries with 750 coaches, 3,000 family members and 3,500 volunteers joining them. Of the seven sports featured at the Games, Alpine skiing drew 290 athletes from 33 countries to Alaska's slopes.
HIGHLIGHTS
Olympic medalist Billy Kidd, professional ski champion, Julie Parisien, Slovenian Olympic medalist Mateja Svet, Alpine skier Kjersti Bjorn-Orli, former member of the U.S. National Ski Team, and former World Junior Downhill champion Mike Makar regularly participate in and conduct clinics for Special Olympics athletes in addition to presenting medals and ribbons to the athletes at competitions. The Special Olympics Alpine skiing program is represented on the Disabled Subcommittee of the U.S. Ski Association. In addition, Special Olympics Alpine skiing has been recognized by the U.S. Ski Coaches Association and the Professional Ski Instructors of America.
