About Us Campaigns How You Can Help Government Affairs ... Animal Fighting: The Final Round Animal Fighting: The Final Round
The Final Round campaign exposes animal fighting (whether with dogs or gamecocks), helps law enforcement personnel combat it, strengthens laws against it, and assists citizens who want to rid their communities of it. In recent years we have seen an increase in animal fighting, both in urban settings and in rural areas. To combat this trend, The HSUS provides educational materials to assist people who want to eliminate animal fighting in their community and who want to strengthen laws against this cruel form of entertainment. Citizen letters remain the single most effective tool for change, so we provide both background information and sample letters for use. You may have some ideas of your own. If they are successful, please share them with us. By using our informational materials and your own creativity, you can foster public awareness in your community about the brutality and danger involved in animal fighting. Bullfighting
The bullfight purports to be a battle to the death in which either participant, bull or matador, may die. In reality, the bull never has a chance to win, and the bullfight is only a cruel spectacle of human dominance. The bullfight consists of three stages. In the first stage, the matador taunts the bull, making him angry. Two men then stab the bull repeatedly. Even before the fight begins, bulls languish in pens that lack sunlight, food, and water. They are also stabbed in the side before release into the arena. While bullfights occur primarily in Mexico and Spain, American and European tourists are largely to blame for the support of this institution. The prevalence of tourists at these events encourages bullfights to occur with greater frequency than they otherwise would. To voice your opposition to bullfighting, write to the Mexican Consulate nearest you and ask that Mexico ban this cruel practice.

THE ANIMAL STYLES Have you ever heard how martial arts originated when early masters studied movements of animals and adapted those movements to their own responses in fighting situations? Ever wonder if it was true? And if true, and if the original masters were really inspired by movements of animals, why is it today, we no longer look to the animals for insight into our own technique? Sure, we still have concepts like "cat stance," "dragon fist," or "crane position." We were taught they came from the actual movement of animals. But, when asked to explain the connection, or to demonstrate how the stance or the technique could be rooted in nature, we are at a loss. It's a pity, because the movement of animals is a universal language. Thinking of techniques as animal movements not only makes them more teachable, but also easier to remember and integrate into our personal styles. Humor me if you will, and let's see what happens when we focus on a few animals, applying the principles of their movement to self defense responses.

Animal Fighting in the Rochester Community
Presented by Anti-Animal Fighting Task Force of Monroe County
To order a copy of the Anti-Animal Fighting Video fill out and submit the form below Recognizing signs of animal fighting. Violence, illegal weapons, drugs, and gambling are common at animal fights. Animal fighting, both rooster and dog fighting, is a felony in New York State and any involvement in animal fighting activities is against the law. Children are often permitted to attend these violent events, desensitizing them to violence. Studies show that children who view this type of violence have a greater acceptance of aggressive attitudes and behavior. Dogs involved in animal fighting have time and again been known to aggressively attack innocent people. Animals that have been trained for fighting are unsafe in our community, particularly around children. A variety of agencies in Monroe County have joined to form an Anti-Animal Fighting Task Force which is focused on eliminating this activity in our community. To make this possible, the Task Force is asking for the aid of residents to let animal fighters know that this activity is unwelcome in our community. Signs of Animal Fighting: There are many signs of animal fighting which are easily recognizable if you know what to look for. For example, dogs are often conditioned before a fight on A treadmill or catmill. In an effort to strengthen a dog's jaws, trainers may have them hang by a tire or other thick rubber extended from a tree or pole.

E-FOIA Farm Bill – Animal Fighting Provisions The Farm Bill (P.L. 107-171, signed into law on May 13, 2002) included provisions amending Section 26 of the Animal Welfare Act (AWA).  The key changes, which take effect 1 year after the date of enactment, are summarized as follows: Interstate Commerce – It will no longer be legal to knowingly sell, buy, transport, deliver, or receive a bird in interstate commerce for purposes of participation in a fighting venture, regardless of the law in the destination state.  Prior to the Farm Bill, the AWA had prohibited such interstate commerce of fighting dogs and other animals, but allowed an exception for birds destined to fight in a state that allows cockfighting. Foreign Commerce – The definition of foreign commerce was expanded to include any movement from any State into any foreign country.  Prior law had defined foreign commerce only as any movement from a foreign country into any State.  It is illegal to sponsor, exhibit, sell, buy, transport, deliver, or receive any bird, dog, or other animal in foreign commerce for participation in a fighting venture. Sponsoring or Exhibiting – In states where cockfighting is allowed, it will be illegal to sponsor or exhibit a bird in a fighting venture if the person knew that any bird was bought, sold, delivered, transported, or received in interstate or foreign commerce for participation in the fighting venture.  In states where cockfighting is not allowed, sponsoring or exhibiting a bird in a fighting venture has been, and will continue to be, illegal under federal law if any bird in the venture was moved in interstate or foreign commerce.  Sponsoring or exhibiting a dog or other animal in a fighting venture will also continue to be illegal under the AWA if any animal in the venture was moved in interstate or foreign commerce.

Imagine reaching for an apple on a tree and having your hand suddenly impaled by a hook that yanks you into an environment where you cannot breathe. This is what a fish faces when hooked. While fishing may seem fun to some people, it is important to remember that on the other end of the line there is a terrified animal fighting for his or her life. These fascinating animals suffer and feel pain just as all animals do.
    http://www.nofishing.net/
    ^ features ^ features ^ features ^ features ^
From the bass desperately trying to escape the pain of the hook as he is reeled in, to the pollock tumbling endlessly in a trawler's net, to the tuna struggling for hours with a hook in her throat attached to miles of line with thousand of hooks, billions of fish suffer at our hands every year. But things are looking up for fish as more and more people are choosing alternatives to fishing and eating fish. Hiking, wildlife watching, and a vegetarian diet are among the many choices that are better for us, the animals, and the environment.
    Fishing Hurts
"The pain system in fish is virtually the same as in birds and mammals."
-Dr. Donald Broom, professor of animal welfare, Cambridge University While fish cannot always express pain and suffering in ways that humans can easily recognize, common sense (as well as marine biologists) tells us that fish feel pain. Fish may not be cute and cuddly like puppies and kittens, but they suffer and experience pain in very much the same way. Fish suffer from being impaled, thrown, crushed, or mutilated while alive, and they are often left to die slowly and painfully of suffocation.
