don't vanish,
they just move. Year-Round Skiers Update:
Read the complete bios of Randy, Lara, and 17 other skiers on the year-round skiers page Congratulations to Randy Goins , who skied in his 100th consecutive month this past January! Randy has been skiing year-round since the fall of 1994, and now has his sights set on 120 consecutive months - 10 years. Randy skis on, "alpine skis/boots and sometimes with randonee bindings and boots." This photo is of Randy near Revelstoke, BC, from February, 2003. Lara Pazemenas is a new addition to the streaker page. She has been skiing year-round for 20 months, having started with a grand adventure in August, 2001. For gear, Lara says, "I now own (and LOVE) a pair of K2 AK Launchers (180cm) loaded with Diamir Fritschi bindings. Clamped to my feet are a pair of Dynafit Tourlite boots". This photo is of Lara and fellow year-round skier Greg Lange on top of Mt. Catherine in March, 2002.

Cloud Seas
A journal and growing archive of backcountry skiing and other journeys above the clouds in the Cascades and beyond
This site started off as a one stop weather page for my own neurotic checks of the weather and conditions up high. I've continued to add comments and photos from ski trips in the Cascades (mostly Mt. Hood - my own backyard) and some points further afield - a way to recall past trips and jones for the next one... The Pacific Northwest possesses a lifetime of opportunities, and there are many others with whom I share a passion for backcountry skiing and inspiring views. Where possible I have included links to trip reports or resources that either inspired me to go to these places, or inspire me to return. All material on this website - photos and content - is ©2003 by Jim Carpenter unless otherwise noted.

All courses are open to telemark, randonee, alpine skiers with binding adapters, and snowboarders. Since most backcountry skills are identical between user groups, working together allows for a broader learning experience plus the addition of different points of view. Each discipline will have their own guide so techniques specific to each group will be addressed throughout the course. M.A.S. divides it's backcountry courses into two categories: "Seminars" and "Tours & Camps". Seminars are skills-based courses with progression to help aspiring skiers and snowboarders prepare and train for their backcountry goals. "Tours & Camps" are programs designed to get you out in the backcountry in a safe and supportive environment. Group gear such as tents and kitchen materials are provided plus avalanche safety equipment. Join M.A.S. for the experience of a lifetime.
