Barefooters are a rare breed. The excitement of this sport offers something to both the recreational and competitive barefooter after the mastered " Water-skiing's Ultimate Challenge. " When it comes to equipment, they have special needs. Only certain equipment will hold up to the demands of these nimble athletes who dance upon the water speed over 40 miles per hour. Flexibility, warmth, and durability are just a starting point. It is the very beginning of the Water-skiing season for the most committed barefooter in the United States. Oddly enough most of the premier barefooters tend to come from the northern United States. Just go the the top of the 2000 Pam Am Standings list and then dig in and find out were the top 5 skiers are from! That right 4 out of 5 of these skiers started in Upper Midwest and New Hampshire. All of them spent many years in a drysuit. It is a well established fact that the smartest money a water-skier can do is own a drysuit. Living in a northern tier state it allowed the most talented barefooters in world perfect their skills. The warmth of a drysuit doubles the value of a boat for 5 key reasons:

BAREFOOT WATER SKIING History and Description Barefoot water skiing began in Florida as a recreational activity in the late 1940s and was quickly introduced into the water ski shows at Cypress Gardens, Fla. Interest in barefooting grew, and in 1961 USA Water Ski organized the American Barefoot Club (ABC). Today, the ABC is a sport division of USA Water Ski, the national governing body for the sport of water skiing in the United States. Originally, membership in the ABC was reserved for barefooters who could stay on their feet for a minimum of 60 seconds. The barefoot craze spread overseas, becoming especially popular among the Australians, who eventually organized the first barefoot tournaments. They were patterned after conventional competition, with an added discipline called "start methods," which has since been discontinued. Today, barefooting is a world-wide sport recognized by the International Water Ski Federation, the world governing body of water skiing. A World Championships is held every two years. The U.S. Barefoot Water Ski Team has won the Team World Championship title nine consecutive times – 1986 in Kelheim, West Germany; 1988 in Melbourne, Australia; 1990 in Jacksonville, Fla.; 1992 in London, England; 1994 in Sydney, Australia; 1996 in Fergus Falls, Minn.; 1998 in Sydney, Australia; 2000 in Fergus Falls, Minn.; and 2002 in Wallsee, Austria.

48. Add Endurance To Your Barefooting
Add Endurance to Your barefooting. Written by Lane Bowers. To get really goodat endurance barefooting, you need to conserve energy and change gears.
http://www.usawaterski.org/pages/divisions/barefoot/dawg4.htm
Add Endurance to Your Barefooting Written by Lane Bowers The addictive challenge of barefooting is to ski that perfect pass where everything flows without the awareness of power and precision. Achieving this elusive pass requires facing dangers others are not willing to face, and prevailing where others are not willing to sacrifice. The passion to ride the adrenaline rush of victory over fear on our way to the next greater challenge parallels life in that the successful confrontation of fear defines our existence. If you are like a lot of barefooters, you have either competed in or at least thought about joining a team and entering one of the popular endurance tournaments, like the Austin Dam to Dam or “Banana” George Blair’s Blairfoot Bananza. These events are a great way to meet other barefooters and compete in an environment where high-tech skills go right out the window. While top-level skiers are present at most of these events, it is the grassroots footers who seem to thrive because they ski in the kind of rough conditions typical to these events. The only requirement to enter these events is to be able to stand up behind the boat, ski through difficult ‘footing conditions, and hang on for a long time at speeds ranging from slow to really fast (sometimes more than 50 mph).

I Love to Foot!
Back to Main Page Back to Personal Page My Barefoot Ski Photo Album My Barefoot Skiing Links In the fall of 1995 a friend asked me to go skiing. He suggested that I try barefooting on his boom, and I did. I loved it. It is not as difficult as many perceive it to be, but it does take persistance, and some good instruction is a very good idea. Here are some thoughts on the subject from yours truly. What I enjoy the most is the anticipation. Here I am pictured in August of 1997 with my dad. He and my mom usually stop by once or twice a summer, and watch to see what I have learned.
  • I first went barefooting in August of 1995
  • I tried to barefoot again in August of 1996
  • Efforts in the fall of 1996 resulted in several injuries
  • My wife insisted that I go get professional instruction before continuing I hate it when she is right
  • In May of 1997 I went to Ron Scarpa's Ski School in Florida
    • Ron taught me a solid three point the most important move in barefooting!
    • He got me doing a good tumble turn
    • Ron improved my straight pull form
    • He gave me three back deep attempts and I learned the basics to go backwords
  • Summer of 1997 I worked on three points, front pulls and tumble turning
