VDO = VEREIN DEUTSCHER OBJEKTSPRINGER e.V.

    BASE JUMPING HISTORY
By Nick Di Giovanni, BASE 194 Delving fully into the history of BASE jumping is outside the scope of this web site. However, in brief, here's how the sport evolved. A note to Para-historians, I learned early two people can see the same thing yet disagree on what they saw, so be careful. A Word About Carl Boenish
Carl Boenish is known as the "Father of Modern BASE jumping." This is because he is the first to apply modern gear (ram air parachutes) and modern freefall techniques (tracking) to fixed object jumps. He is also the first to show the world through his films that fixed object jumps are not one-off stunts but jumps that are actually repeatable. Known to his family as Ronnie, Carl is 21 years of age in 1960 when he begins jumping at the DZ in Lake Elsinore, California. He becomes an Electrical Engineer working for the Hughes Corporation and in 1966 he's heavily involved in photographing the early days of RW on the West Coast. One day in the summer of 1966 Carl hears a weird story. A story that would change the course of his life. Two skydivers from Barstow, California, Michael Pelky, an accountant, age 25 and Brian Schubert, a truck driver, age 26, decided to parachute off Yosemite's El Capitan. They jumped side by side on a Sunday afternoon at around 5:00 PM and both did decent delays but did not track away from the wall. Their round Paracommander canopies opened fine but the updrafts and swirling winds pushed them back into the face and both repeatedly banged into the wall on the way down. By the time they landed in the rocky talus below both are pretty beaten up. Pelky has numerous abrasions and a broken ankle. Schubert also had many abrasions plus a broken leg and broken foot. Both were ambulanced to a local hospital.

    BASE jumping
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. BASE jumping is the sport of using a parachute to jump from fixed objects. "BASE" is an acronym that stands for the four categories of objects from which one can jump; (B) uilding, (A) ntenna, (S) pan (the word used for a bridge), and (E) arth (the word used for a cliff). BASE jumps are generally from much lower height than a traditional airplane parachute jump, although there are notable exceptions. In the United States, an "advanced" skydiver (over 100 airplane skydives) is recommended, on an airplane jump, to deploy the main parachute no lower than 2,000 feet. At that time, if the airplane jumper had already been in freefall for at least 1,000 feet, the jumper is traveling 120 miles per hour, and is 11 seconds from the ground. Some BASE jumps, very high cliffs, can be from heights of over 5,000 feet, though these are rare. Most BASE jumps are made from less than 1,000 feet. A BASE jump from a 500 foot object is about 6 seconds from the ground.

Stefan Banic, a Slovak inventor, constructed a prototype of a parachute in 1913 and tested it in Washington D.C. in front of the U.S. Patent Office and military representatives by jumping from a 41-floor building and subsequently from an airplane in 1914. His patented parachute became a standard equipment for U.S. pilots during the World War I. Banic worked in the United States from 1907 to 1921, with two interruptions. His name is not well-known, however, the Patent Office and military records confirm these historical facts, as you can also see, if you visit various Air Force (.af.mil) and government (.gov) sites. In some sources his first name appears in the English form Stephen . The Slovak spelling is ©tefan Baniè , written with diacritical marks in CEE character set (Latin-2), the Slovak pronunciation is approximately Shteffun Bunnich Stefan Banic was born on November 23, 1870 in

E-mail Us I magine the scene. Driving up the Sheikh Zayed Road with the spectacular Emirates Towers coming into prominence on the right. The sun is shining and the sky is blue but then all of a sudden something catches the eye. A small speck – surely it’s a bird – comes hurtling off the top of the tallest tower plummeting towards the ground at 100 miles per hour, seemingly out of control. Imagine the horror when you realise that tiny spec is actually a human being; and then imagine the relief when you see a parachute unfurl just yards from the ground to break the fall. It is a moment that would stay with you for life, but one that is being experienced across the world as the adrenalin-fuelled - yet illegal - sport of BASE jumping spreads.
