History of Beach Volleyball
http://www.Volleyball.ORG Early 1920s Most accounts place the sport's origin in Santa Monica, California, where the first Volleyball courts were put up on the beach at the Playground (Santa Monica). Families played 6 vs. 6. Beach volleyball became the principal sport in a French nudist camp founded in Franconville (north-western suburb of Paris). First two-man beach volleyball game was played in Santa Monica, California. Beach volleyball appeared in Palavas, Lacanau and Royan (France), around Sofia (Bulgaria), Prague (Czechoslavakia), and Riga (Latvia). In the US, people would escape the depression by going to the beach, 4 vs 4 and 3 vs 3 games were played. First official two-man beach tournament was held, at State Beach in California. It was organized by Holtzman and won by Saenez-Harris. First tournament held in California (Los Angeles), awarded the best teams with a case of Pepsi as the winners' prize. 1950's Open tournaments held at five beaches in California. FIVB JUNIOR BEACH WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP AWARDED TO FRANCE The International Volleyball Federation announced on Wednesday that the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships Under-21, presented by Swatch, have been awarded to France. The championship thus returns to its spiritual homeland, where the inaugural Junior World Championship was held in August 2001. The event is to be staged in cooperation with promoter Goëlo Côtes d’Armor at Saint Quay Portrieux, France at a venue on Plage du Casino (August 6-10) and will be presented by Swatch, the world’s leading watch and timing specialists who are now the official title sponsor of the Swatch-FIVB World Tour. "We are particularly happy to announce this important event, as we consider our annual Junior World Championships the breeding ground for tomorrow’s elite athletes and provides them with the perfect opportunity to pit themselves against their peers in top quality competition," said FIVB President, Dr. Rubén Acosta. The competition will be open to 24 teams of each gender (total of 48 teams), and comprise one day of qualification and four main draw days of competition. Negotiations are underway for allocating the FIVB World Championships Under-18, with Thailand being the leading contender and the most outstanding candidate for this event. An announcement is expected later this week.

Morgan, an instructor at the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) in Holyoke, Mass., decides to blend elements of basketball, baseball, tennis, and handball to create a game for his classes of businessmen which would demand less physical contact than basketball. He creates the game of Volleyball (at that time called mintonette). Morgan borrows the net from tennis, and raises it 6 feet 6 inches above the floor, just above the average man's head. There are unconfirmed whispers of men’s teams playing on the beach in Hawaii, but most accounts place the sport's origin in Santa Monica, California where the first Volleyball courts are put up on the beach at the Playground. Beach Volleyball Rules The following is based upon the California Beach Volleyball Association's (CBVA) rules of play for beach volleyball. They present only the areas where there are differences or misunderstandings with indoor rules. Other associations (AVP, WPVA, AVA,, USA Outdoor, etc.) may have a few modifications but generally their interpretations are similar. Special thanks to the officiating legend of all time, Steve Lawton.
    A. Net Play
    1. You may go completely under the net into your opponent's court as long as there is no interference with the opponent. 2. The ball must cross the net anywhere between, but not over, the poles. Net antennas are not used. 3. With the exception of the serve, the ball can contact any part of the net and its supporting ropes and cables, but not the poles or eye hooks, during play. 4. The ball can be played back to one's side of the net if it has crossed past the imaginary extension of the net on the sides of the court or under the net as long as a team has one or more contacts left.
