What do you get when you combine the low-impact aerobic workout of cycling, the challenge of a racket sport, and the camaraderie of a team sport? Bicycle Polo!
Polo is thought to be the oldest team sport known to man, dating from the days when Persian warriors first rode horses into battle. Bicycle polo evolved a bit later, having had to wait for some clever chap to invent the modern bicycle. Polo has long been known as "the king of games," but the money and skills required have greatly limited its popularity. Bicycle polo has a much broader appeal, since almost anyone can ride a bike, not to mention afford one. Anyone, male or female, aged nine to ninety, can play bicycle polo!
A Unique Combination: Cycling, Racket Sport, and Team Sport
Bicycle polo combines three key elements: cycling, racket sports, and team play. Most active people currently enjoy at least one of those by itself (e.g. mountain biking, tennis, or basketball); imagine how much fun it is to unite all three!

Bicycle Polo quickly spread to England, and the continent., and 1897, the first club was started in the United States. In 1908 it was included in the Olympic Games held in Shepherds Bush, London. The sport all but died out during the First World War, but enjoyed a rebirth during the 30s. It remains a popular sport in some areas. For example, there are over 10,000 members in the Cycle Polo Federation of India. This doesn't include the many thousands who play the sport informally. Perhaps this popularity is driven by the ready availability of bicycles û which also happen to be the most common mode of transportation in the country. Rhagavendra Dundlod, the Secretary of the Cycle Polo Federation of India, and son of the Raja of Dundlod, tells how the previous Maharaja of Jaipur always kept bicycles stored at his polo field so he could enjoy a regular game of bicycle polo with his friends. The sport remains popular among many equestrian polo players in India both as a means of conditioning and in order to practice team strategy. Indeed, bicycle polo is a compulsory part of the training regimen for members of the Indian Army Polo Team.

    http://www.bikepolo.com/about.html
A Synopsis) The Origin and Object of the Game The game of Bike Polo, if you haven't already figured out, is a variation of the equestrian game with a bicycle being substituted for the polo pony. Although not as glamorous as the equine variety, Bike Polo offers as much challenge and fun without the prohibitive price tag. The game's birthplace is believed to be India where, about a hundred years ago, British troops used bicycles to hone their equestrian polo skills. Like horse polo, the bicycle version is contested by two teams. The simple objective for each team is to score a greater number of goals than its opponent within a specified amount of time. Equipment All that is needed to play is a bike, an approved cycling helmet, a Bike Polo mallet, and a Bike Polo ball. For those who already own a bike and helmet, the investment is around $50. The Field A grassy area 100 x 60 yards constitutes the USBPA official field, but you can play on almost any size or surface depending on availability. Just remember, falls do happen and grass is softer than asphalt or dirt. Teams Each team can have only four riders participating at a time. The teams can be all male, all female or coed.

    Playtimes:
We play at 4:00 on Sunday afternoons at the Columbia Point Marina Park, on the lawn between the parking lot and the river. 3:00 from mid-October to mid-March.
We also have lunchtime games at the Battelle Staff Association playfield (6th and Einstein, across from Battelle Warehouse) four players show up. To get on the e-mail list for coordinating lunch meetings send us a message. We are based in Richland Washington, USA. We have a core group of regular players, a promising bunch of beginners, and some peripatetic individuals who play when they can. We invite correspondence from any other players regarding meets, rules, equipment, and polo in general. Provisional International Rules The Cycle Polo Federation of India has been running tournaments for many years, and their rules cover a good many eventualities. These rules, based on the CPFI rules, were used for the 4th International and will, with a little further editing, become the International Rules. The official IBPF Rules will be posted here as soon as they are released. These are the rules we use now.
For those familiar with equestrian polo, the rules of bicycle polo differ in that ride-offs

    2. Your feet may not be touching the ground when you hit the ball.
