If you want to know more about bicycling in Houston, you've come to the right place. BikeHouston has replaced the Houston Area Bicyclist Alliance , so it was only right that the web site get a little spruce-up. You can access all the same good information as before, but now you can get even more: Media Watch Spur 527 closure forces bike lane removal As reported by Danny Perez in the Houston Chronicle March 11, 2003: Since it was first announced that West Alabama would be used as an alternative thoroughfare while the spur is shut down for three years, there has been talk that the bike lanes from Woodhead to Weslayan would be removed to make room for more vehicles. The idea became solid when the city unveiled its mitigation plan... The city decided to remove the coveted bike lanes and, to appease the community, place caution signs for bikers on Fairview Street, about three-quarters of mile to the north, as an alternative.

Recumbent
Bicycling
on America's Roadways
with Charles DiBella Saturday, March 22 2003 Unwilling to participate in an oil driven economy, and while peddling his way along dangerous and polluted roadways, Charles DiBella visits and learns the truth about twenty first century America as he passes through and visits communities like yours along the way. His longtime dream of empowering the poor and under-educated with free and open ACCESS TO INFORMATION has led him to focus on observing certain specific conditions in each community he visits. He experiences first hand, local hospitality, economic vitality, homelessness, street crime, substance abuse and addictions, noise and air pollution levels, the general health of the people, their driving habits, their wastefulness, the viability of their recycling efforts, and local free internet accessability. A high tech nomad, environmentalist and minimalist, he lives an austere lifestyle, outdoors, carrying all of his worldly possessions with him. He lives on the edge of poverty, appearing to others as a homeless person, working on the front lines of the war that's taking place on your backstreets. Through no fault of his own he became disabled years ago after being severely injured and nearly killed when struck by a car. Since then he has overcome his disability only to be repeatedly harrassed, threatened, and struck down by the growing ranks of hurried, frustrated, and distracted motorists that pollute our air, destroy our earth, and congest our roadways.
