CABO: California Association of Bicycling Organizations California's bicycle clubs organized into a state federation in 1972 to protect bicyclists' interests statewide and to encourage, maintain, and improve bicycling conditions. CABO fosters and promotes a favorable climate for bicycling in California by (1) serving as a forum and information clearing house for bicycle clubs and other bicycle groups, (2) representing the interests of cyclists before the appropriate governmental bodies to protect their rights and promoting laws, policies, and actions that treat cyclists equitably, (3) and any other activities not specified in (1) or (2), but which reasonably relate to the purpose.
In addition to the usual officers, CABO has Area Directors which mirror the boundaries of the twelve Caltrans districts. All are unpaid volunteers. California Bicycle Touring Information Subscribe!

Bicycling came later in our outdoor activities. Trailwalker had been using her Huffy to ride around town for some time. Then Broken Claw bought himself an 18-speed Mongoose Switchback trail bike. Trailwalker soon upgraded her wheels to a Specialized model, and we were off and running (or, riding, I should say). We still ride around town, to the park or to the pizza shop for lunch, but the speed of bicycling, over walking, adds a new dimension to recreational trails. Click below to read about some of the biking adventures we've shared. Assateague Island National Seashore
The park's small size doesn't provide much of a ride, but the ocean surf, sand dunes, and wild ponies make for a fun trip. More
This one's a real canal. We parked the car directly beneath the Chesapeake City bridge and rode the canal access roads to Delaware. More From the Paw Paw tunnel to the end of the line at Cumberland, we've only ridden a small part of this popular trail along the Potomac River. More Gold Mine Trail We were prepared for muddy conditions and the possibility of rain, but it turned out to be a great day to ride through Stony Creek valley in the Pennsylvania Mountains.

Truckee, Tahoe, Placerville, Yosemite, Merced, Mountain View in 8 Days
    Sept 27 to Oct 4, 1997
    Text by Mark Atkins
    HTML by Loren Stafford
    Summary
Two bicyclists (Mark and Loren, 37 and 52 yrs old) pedaled their recumbent* bicycles 555 miles in 8 days, seeing California's best inland scenery the Sierra Nevada, Truckee River, Lake Tahoe, Gold Country, Yosemite National Park, and the Merced River. No flats, no falls, no failures. I wrote this travel-log because I could find no net advice on bicycling the Sierras. Our path guarantees a great route and a fun time. But take along Kreb's bike map:"Lake Tahoe and the Gold Country", which helped us. And take a detailed CA map, as Kreb's does not extend south into Yosemite.
Saturday 9/27: Santa Clara, CA to South Tahoe. 53 miles riding, ~1000' elev gain by bike, 6000' gain by train.
The weather was a 95-degree heat wave; so, rather than bike through California's hot central valley to the cool Sierras, we rolled our bikes onto Amtrack at the Santa Clara Golf Course at 6:30am. Amtrack's California car and its conductor were quite accommodating. My short-wheelbase (36") ATP recumbent fit into the child-size rack. Loren's 90" faired Tour Easy required removal of a wheel to squeeze into the larger rack. Amtrack's "Train with a Friend" fare cost only $39 for two for the 200-mile trip to Truckee. The train was late arriving in Sacramento, the midpoint of our non-pedalled journey, where we hustled our bikes off the train and into an Amtrack connector bus. We shoved them into those luggage compartments under the carriage, which the bus driver frowned upon but permitted.
