Pakistan lift World Cup blind cricket
By Our Sports Correspondent

LAHORE, Dec 14: An unbeaten 87 runs by Ashraf Bhatti helped Pakistan win the second World Cup Blind Cricket Tournament defeating South Africa by five wickets at Chennai.
Chasing a target of 256 in 40 overs, Pakistan scored the required runs for the loss of five wickets with 2.4 overs to spare. Ashraf slammed five fours and faced 96 balls during a marathon stay of 142 minutes.
Having lost openers Tariq Samuel (14) and Sulman Elahi (10), with only 33 on the scoreboard, Ashraf alongwith key scorers Mohammad Shahbaz (28), Abdul Razzaq (30) and Mohammad Fayyyaz (25 not out), eventually outclassed the South Africans.
Batting first, NA Neyer (59) and RW Liebenberg (51) played well for South Africa, enabling them to reach an impressive total of 255 for 8 in 40 overs.
For Pakistan, captain pacer Abdul Razzaq, Mohammad Waqas and Sulman Elahi all claimed two wickets each for 50, 53 and 59 runs, respectively. Meanwhile President General Pervez Musharraf congratulated the team for winning the World Cup.
"It gives me great pleasure to felicitate you on my behalf and on behalf of the people of Pakistan at this momentous victory. The blind cricketers have won laurels in the past also but this is the first time that they have won the coveted World Cup.

Pakistan capable of good results: Musharraf
ISLAMABAD, Jan 15: President General Pervez Musharraf believes that Pakistan cricket team has the potential to deliver and has to combine together for good results in next month's World Cup.
"The Pakistani team is talented, it has many individual great players - they have to jell together to materialize their individual and collective potential."
The president was speaking at a reception held to honour the visually impaired Pakistani team that won the second World Blind Cricket Cup in India.
Musharraf, lauding the performance of the World Cup victorious blind cricket team, on Wednesday asked Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to patronize the visually impaired cricketers to help them win more laurels for the country.
"I hope that PCB will continue to facilitate and fund the blind cricket team so that cricket as a sport for the blind and the visually impaired becomes firmly rooted in Pakistan," he said.
Musharraf appreciated the skills, positive approach and the will to succeed of Pakistani blind cricketers, stating that they have done the entire nation proud with their outstanding accomplishment.

    Blind cricket hits fifty
Blind cricket notched up a half century recently when the Queensland Blind Cricket Association (QBCA) celebrated its first 50 years. In 1951 the Queensland Blind Wattle Cricket Club started cricket games for people with a vision impairment and today the QBCA has 40 players throughout Queensland. QBCA secretary Chris Pocock and past secretary Trevor Vayro have written a book titled From Humble Beginnings to commemorate 50 years of blind cricket. Chris Pocock said the game had changed over time and there was still room for improvement. "Blind cricket is exactly the same as cricket except blind cricketers bowled underarm and used a black nylon ball filled with lead weights and a bottle top to make the sound," said Chris. From Humble Beginnings captures the history of blind cricket in Queensland from its beginnings to its current streak of three consecutive national titles. The QBCA has three teams and a squad that competes in a national competition every two years.

CRICKET Aussies hoping to make a rattle for Cup honours By SHAUN HOLLIS TO WIN the World Cup, 11 blind Australians must listen for a baby's rattle above the screaming of 30,000 Indians. Michael Zannis, 27, of Rostrevor, is one of the 11 who plays for Australia in blind cricket, a sport played with a ball that sounds like a baby's rattle. The rattling sound must be heard above the sound of a huge cup final crowd - at the last final held in India four years ago 30,000 fans were there and the game was televised live around the sub-continent. Zannis and fellow SA team member Nick Carozza left Friday (November 29) for the second Blind Cricket World Cup to be held in Chennai, India, from December 4-14. Batsman and medium pace bowler Zannis rarely plays in front of big crowds, but relished them in the last world cup. ''(The noise) does make it difficult but you can focus off it, I really enjoy the atmosphere,'' Zannis says. Zannis was disappointed to miss the final last time after Australia dominated the minor rounds then lost by eight runs to Pakistan in the semi-final, with South Africa the eventual winner. The Australian players are determined to make amends this time, and start as joint favourites with host India.

Cricket: The World Cup for the visually

V.K. SHASHIKUMAR in New Delhi It was a winter morning nine years ago, that changed George Abraham's life. As he woke up in the room he had been put up in at Dehradun's National Institute of Visually Handicapped (NIVH), he heard some laughter outside. Curious, he stepped out and saw a group of children playing cricket. They were all blind. Yet they exuded a sense of competitiveness, spirit and confidence that belied their disability. That was when George decided to organise cricket for the blind in India.
Battle royal: blind players in action
The inspiration had come at the right time. George was on a visit to NIVH in search of ideas that could dispel the notion that the blind are helpless. "Cricket gives them an opportunity to prove their mettle. It is also a means of recreation and release for them," he says.
But how do they play? "It is the sense of hearing that is the basis of cricket for the blind," he says. Apart from a few changes, all other rules of regular cricket apply to the game. A major difference is the ball which is filled with ball-bearings to make a rattling sound.

CRICKET Equipment Centres of Excellence County Development Officers Cricket Scholarships ... The Indoor School Cricket is the most quintessentially English of all sports. The earliest known reference to a game believed to be cricket is in the household accounts of Edward I in 1300. One of the most popular theories about the origins of cricket has the game played in pastures, with the ‘wicket gate’ as target and a shepherd’s crooked staff serving as a bat. Cricket has evolved ever since and in 1835 was given its first set of formal rules, or ‘Code of Laws’, by the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC). The laws of cricket – which can be found on the MCC website, under ‘Laws’ - have remained largely unchanged over the centuries.  The game is governed by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB). You can find cricket clubs throughout the UK. However, of the home nations, only England is one of the ten cricketing Test nations in the world.
    EQUIPMENT
Schools and clubs may well provide most of the equipment required for the game but provision will vary from school to school and club to club. Equipment you may have or wish to provide for your child includes cricketing trousers, shirts, jumpers, pads, a helmet, gloves, a box, and a cricket bat and balls. Cricket shoes are also available but to begin with a child could get away with white trainers. For practicing at home you might also want stumps and bails. A new ECB safety guidance promotes the wearing of cricket helmets by young cricketers while batting and keeping wicket. To promote this, the ECB and the BBC are providing every club and school that wishes to participate in the scheme with three junior helmets for £10.

    Blind cricketer makes England squad
by Sally Hall A student who lost his sight at the age of 20 has won a place in the England cricket squad for the 2002 Blind Cricket World Cup. Andy Dalby-Welsh will travel to India at the end of this month to play for his country. Four years ago, Andy was a keen footballer who played for his university team. He was about to take a free kick in the middle of a match when his eyesight suddenly blurred. By the afternoon he was unable to read the blackboard in his lecture and found he could see nothing at all if he held his hand up in front of one eye. Andy, 24, a final year social policy student at Sussex University, is now registered as blind. He has a genetic condition called Leber's optic neuropathy, which has deteriorated to leave him with only limited peripheral vision.
