Blind cricketer sets his sights high From Shankar Bennur DH News Service MYSORE, Nov 4 He may not be a Sachin Tendulkar or our own Javagal Srinath. But he has talent similar to what these cricketing stars might have had during their school days. The difference is that he is partially blind. Meet L Shekar Naik, an 8th standard student of 100-year-old Blind School at Bamboo Bazaar here. He is practising a lot of cricket these days. The reason — Shekar has been selected from Karnataka to represent India in Under-19 World Cup for Blind scheduled to be held at Chennai from December 3. Of the six students, including totally and partially blind, sent from Karnataka for World Cup selections at New Delhi, 16-year-old Shekar came out with flying colours along with four others. An all-rounder, Shekar is the first student from Mysore to play for India at the World Cup. Countries like Australia, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, South Africa, Bangladesh and England are taking part in the 15-day World Cup, organised by the Blind Cricket Association of India, New Delhi. The first World Cup was held at New Delhi in 1998. A native of Arakere village in Shimoga district, Shekar has played at the national, south-zone and state-level blind cricket tournaments Under-19 category. He underwent a week-long special coaching at Delhi recently. Shekar comes from a poor family. Unfortunately, his mother Jameela Bai is also a blind. His uncle takes care of his studies and activities.

Rivalry for final World Cup cut hots up
South Africa's crushing win over Sri Lanka on Friday night gave a better indication of the composition of the 2003 World Cup squad than yesterday's announcement of a 30-man provisional squad. Blind faith leads Dean to champion Zimbabwe cause Cup games will unite our people, says voice of Harare Countdown to Cricket World Cup LG Electronics, one of the CWC's major sponsors, is planning on transporting a giant cricket bat across the country. British Blind Sport
British Blind Sport is a registered charity and the co-ordinating body of sport for the blind and partially sighted in the UK. It believes in the many benefits that sport can offer visually impaired people, including improved health and mobility, broadening horizons, making new friends, and becoming more independent and tries to encourage as many blind and partially sighted children and adults as possible to participate in sport at all levels, from 'grassroots' to Paralympic representation. Its sports are run by sub-committees, staffed by visually impaired and sighted volunteers, and include archery, athletics, bowls, cricket, football, goalball, judo, martial arts, swimming and ten-pin bowling. In addition there is considerable interest in chess, golf, riding, sailing and skiing. The BBS also encourages visually impaired people to pursue their chosen sports through membership of their local sighted sports clubs.

National cricket for blind from today
CHENNAI, FEB. 10. ``Disability is God-given. Handicap is man-made. Children are children,'' said Mr. George Abraham, chairman, Association for Cricket for the Blind in India, here, on Sunday. He was briefing the media about the HSBC National cricket tournament for the blind, that begins in Chennai on February 11 (Monday). Mr. Abraham dwelt on the keenness of the visually impaired boys to excel in the game and said they should be encouraged in every respect to pursue their passion. The winners of the four zonal competitions, Delhi (North), Karnataka (South), Gujarat (West) and Bengal (East) will compete in a league-cum-knockout tournament, to be conducted on a 40-overs-a-side basis at the SPIC-YMCA and Southern Railway, Perambur, grounds. The final will be held at SPIC-YMCA on February 14, with the winner taking home Rs. 10,000. Mr. Abraham thanked the HSBC Bank, which will be sponsoring the tournament, and CricInfo, for its organisational support, and added there was a good chance of the World Cup for the blind to be held in Chennai during December this year.
