The Bobsled, via Bonneville Shoreline The Bobsled is a famous downhill romp, extending from the Bonneville Shoreline Trail down to the homes of the Avenues. Although it's just one descent option from the BST, this little trail is so famous, it deserves its own web page. This twisting, turning downhill runs in a creekbed, 1000 vertical feet over 1.6 miles. This is strictly a downhill don't even dream of riding uphill on the Bobsled. Riding the loop requires good aerobic capability for the uphill and advanced technical ability for the downhill. (There's about 1/4 mile of steep loose rock at the beginning. After that, you're golden.) Rob ducks a deadfall as the Bobsled twists and turns. April 30, 2002. Although the BST can be ridden during temporary winter thaws, snow tends to accumulate in the deep shaded canyon of the Bobsled. Once there's a foot or more of snow, you won't be able to get through. There are three ways to get up: via City Creek, via Terrace Hills, or via Dry Gulch and the Popperton paved trail. The most direct of these routes is to grind up paved Terrace Hills drive. City Creek Canyon Option (Northern Loop): Going west on 11th Avenue, keep right onto Bonneville Blvd and go downhill. Just before the City Creek paved road, find a small parking area on the right of the road, GPS N 40° 47.388' W 111° 52.709'. There's a stiff climb on singletrack, 650 vertical feet over the first mile, then a more reasonable rate of climb. To reach the Bobsled, you'll go 3 miles, with total elevation gain of 1250 feet. Pass the Terrace Hills access trail, with forks off right downhill on a hairpin left turn at around mile 2.5.

Four-Man Bobsled/by Michael O'Connor
PARK CITY, Utah - Todd Hays, who just missed out on a medal in the the two-man bobsled last Sunday, was determined not to let the week - and the 2002 Winter Olympics - pass without him picking up a shiny piece of history. Saturday, February 23, 2002 American Hays can drive into bobsled history by Tom Withers/ Associated Press PARK CITY, Utah - The last U.S. men's bobsled medal came when Ike was in the White House, Elvis was just slipping on his blue suede shoes, and Don Larsen was perfect. Click here for more info Bobsled Location: Utah Nearest Town: Salt Lake City Directions to Trailhead: Drive East on South Temple St. Take the first left past the 1300 E. Stop Light. Drive North past the Shriner's Children's Hospital and turn left just past their property. Drive past Salt Lake City Cemetery and the crematorium. Take first right after crematorium and park in parking lot of school/park. Either shuttle or ride straight up the road for about a 1/4 mile and there will be a gate to enter the Bonneville Shorline Trail. Ride up about 1-1/2 miles to the big bend where there is a big sign prohibiting bikes, horses, atv's, etc. to the left. Turn right off the face of the hill(doesn't really look like a trail, but trust me, it's there)-this is the beginning of the bobsled. Trail Description: Very steep, washboard beginning. Fast, sharp banked turns in the middle(hence the bobsled name) and fast singletrack at the end. Oh, and a b**ch of a climb for 75 feet at the end. Of late there has been a great revival of interest among people of all ages in the boyish sport of coasting and tobogganing. So keen has this become that we find in Europe clubs formed for coasting down the mountain side, and tracks built in deep snows with many difficult twists and turns to test the skill of the pilots on the American bobs, which they use and which are there improperly called toboggans. Also some of the New York papers have been filled with letters from bald-headed and gray-headed "boys" discussing the propriety of certain terms familiar to their youthful days and used in connection with the different methods of steering their sleds or bobs down the snowy hillside. But we will not enter into this discussion, for the good reason that the terms in question, " belly-buster," "belly-whopper," etc., are the ones used by the boys in different sections of the country, and consequently all of them proper in describing the method of coasting where the coaster lies prone upon the sled and goes down head first; but with the improvement of the sled and the bob there have crept in a number of devices for steering these crafts, the use of which
Should be Forbidden by the Authorities
because of the imminent peril the riders incur (especially the helmsman) when they are used.

The Bobsled Steiner Section of the B.S.T. Did you watch the Salt Lake 2002 Winter Games , and wonder what it would be like to ride the bobsled? Here's your chance to do it mountain bike style! The Bobsled is a fast, challenging, one way drop off of the B.S.T.!! I've given the Bobsled a lower rating for scenery, this is because you won't have time to take in the scenery beyond your front tire! This ride starts with a good strong climb up Terrace Hills Drive, then continues on up the B.S.T. to the City Creek Canyon saddle. From here it drops down the pipeline and is pretty loose and torn up. After the first 1/4 more or so, it turns into the high banked, swooping ride that it's named for! How to get there: Park at the corner of Terrace Hills Drive and 11th Ave. Head straight up Terrace Hills Drive until you reach a cul-de-sac, the trail begins on the right. It is marked with a B.S.T. signpost. Rating: Scenery: Length: 3.25 mile loop The Bobsled Profile For a topo, click here

    Bobsled Through the Years
    ...
    Encyclopedia: Bobsledding
An offspring of the toboggan, the ancestor of the modern-day bobsled was conceived in Switzerland late in the 1800s.
The men's competitions will be held over two days with two runs on each day. The women's event will consist of two runs held on one day.
Each nation may enter a maximum of two sleds in each event. The sleds are made of fiberglass and must adhere to strict size and weight restrictions. A driver steers the sled by pulling a rope with his right hand to go right or a separate rope with his left hand to go left. DID YOU KNOW?

It's been 14 years since the Jamaican bobsled team made its debut at the Olympics. Immortalized in the Disney movie Cool Runnings , the team has finished 29th, 34th, 14th, and 21st.
The second member of the two-person team is the brakeman. Always the last person in the sled, he or she pulls up on the brake, lowering a piece of metal into the ice to stop the sled after the run. To round out a four-man team a pair of pushers are added. They are responsible for helping get the sled started.
The sleds rip down the icy track one at a time, reaching speeds of up to 90 mph. The team with the lowest aggregate time after the two runs will win the gold.
