Bobsleigh adventure handbook
Bobsleigh was invented by a group of Englishmen on holiday in Switzerland in 1890 when they raced down the snow covered road between St Moritz and Celerina on primitive bobs. The first races were for 5 to 6 people and a requirement of the competition was that each crew included at least one woman, most proper! Bobsleigh is now in two and four person bobs with separate events for men and women. Competitions are run down iced tracks with at least 15 banked curves. The track is approximately 1,500m long and speeds of up to 90 mph are reached. The object of modern bobsleigh is to get to the finishing line in the shortest time. Although the condition of the ice and the preparation of the bobsleigh affects its speed, a fast start and a clean drive are crucial. The passengers' role at the start is vital and in world class competition the crew are often accomplished track athletes. Once in the bob, the passengers' role is over and it is then the responsibility of the driver to steer the best line as gravity pulls them down to the finishing line and, hopefully, a team or competition best time.

A great simulation with an Elite -ish economics bit too. What more could you ask for? Nat Pryce
I must admit I was a bit dubious when I received Bobsleigh . I'm not a great fan of simulations as I've always found them on the unplayable and boring side. But I'm happy to say that Bobsleigh has converted me, it simulates "the fast and dangerous Winter Olympic sport" of bobsleigh racing. (Never!) You must buy your bob, train your team, choose which track to race at and guide the bob down the track in the fastest time possible.
Everything must be run to a tight budget. The upkeep of your team must be paid for, as must the fitness training and repairs to your bob. If you race well, your sponsors will pay you more money, but if you do badly or crash, you receive less and less money, until you're bankrupt. Make piles of moolah and you can buy even faster bobs. The top class of bob is the Olympic one, and you can only enter the Winter Olympics and go for the gold medal with one of these.
The problem I usually find with simulations is that you can never see from the main display what is going on without constantly checking your instrument panel. In

BOBSLED OR BOBSLEIGH

Bobsledding is a sport of skill, strength, and speed, in which 2 or 4-man teams race down a 1500-meter, artificially-banked ice track. Bobsledding first became popular in the Alps of Switzerland in the 19th century. Bobsleds were raced on icy grounds and passes. The first competition was held in 1898 with five-passenger sleds. The sport spread rapidly to other countries, and by 1914, when the first European championships took place at St. Moritz, France, there were more than a hundred bobsled runs in Europe. In 1923 the Federation Internationale de Bobsleigh et de Tobogganing was created to set up rules. The next year, bobsledding was introduced into the Olympics at Chamonix, France and has been a recognized Olympic event since 1928. Equipment
There are two types of racing sleds-a 2-man and a 4-man, weighing approximately 200 kg (440 lbs) and 275 kg (605 lbs) respectively. 'Junior Bobs,' sleds for beginners, are significantly lighter, weighing about 70 kg (154 lbs). The weight and dimensions of the sleds are standardized for competition purposes, but components, such as steering reins, seats and push bars, are often customized to fit individual pilots and crew. Clothing and Protective Gear
Bobbers wear snug-fitting stretchy speed suits, helmets, goggles, padding, gloves, and special spiked shoes, to ensure a firm grip on the ice during the push start.

About

Bobsleigh racing was developed in search of the ultimate thrill by the 19th century. Considered the world's first sliding sport, skeleton originated in the Swiss town of St. Moritz in the late 1800s. The first competition was held in 1884. Riders raced down the road from St. Moritz to Celerina, where the winner received a bottle of champagne. It wasn't until 1887 that riders began competing in the prone position used today. The sport took its name in 1892, when a new sled made mostly of metal was introduced. People thought it looked like a skeleton. The sport's governing body, the Federation Internationale de Bobsleigh et Tobagganing (FIBT), was founded in 1923. This competition has been part of the official programme since the 1st Olympic Winter Games in Chamonix Mont Blanc in 1924.

The Army’s place within international bobsleighing is well established and the Army Team has been represented in all the British Olympic Teams since 1972. It is the only winter sport in which the Army has won Olympic medals
The toboggan has existed as a means of transport over snow and ice for several thousand years, although references to it as a form of recreational pastime only date back to the sixteenth century. Bobsleighing (Bob) is reputed to have been started by two Englishmen in St. Moritz, with local farrier Christian Mathis producing the first bobsled in 1890. The first bob races were run on the road from St. Moritz to Celerina although by 1903, what is virtually the course still used today was opened. At the very first Winter Olympics in Chamonix in 1924, the four man Bob of Colonel Brooke, Major Broome, Major Richardson and Captain Scrutton won the Silver Medal. In the 1928 St Moritz Games Captain Dalrymple was a member of the only ever 5-man bob team. In the 1964 Innsbruck Olympics a Gold medal was won in the 2 man bob. One half of winning team was Grenadier Guards Captain Robin Dixon. Together with Tony Nash, they provided Britain’s finest moment in the sport to date. However Army bobbers have been constantly in the World Top Ten ever since and, in the Nagano Games, Corporals Sean Olsson and Dean Ward from 2 PARA were part of the bronze medal 4 man bob. Click
