Welcome bocce enthusiasts. As the 2001 LKBL season nears the halfway point, the divisional standings are starting to take shape. While the weather thus far has not been too hot , we are happy to report that your beloved Wildcats are smokin'. Thru 6 weeks of play, the Cats sit atop their division with an outstanding league leading record of 15-3. Also worth noting is the fact that they remain unbeaten in the first 2 games of each match. The team focus seems to slip a little in Game 3, possibly due to apathy or maybe one too many trips to the keg. The other top teams in the league at this point are the Outlaws (13-5), the Buds (10-8), and the surprise team of the year, the Fish (10-8). The veteran Junkers (9-9) are the only other team at .500 or better.

64. Bocce In USA
In the United States, bocce is mostly played in the eastern and southwesternparts of the country. bocce IN USA. USA bocce OVERVIEW
http://www.seattlebocce.com/html/bocce_in_usa.html
In the United States, bocce is mostly played in the eastern and southwestern parts of the country. It is very fragmented and loosely organized. The style played is almost exclusively open (95%), which is a very simplified raffa system, and it is considered more as a recreational game than sport. Every region plays by its own rules sometimes very different from each other. The United States Bocce Federation is headquartered in Park Ridge, Illinois. There are also several other bocce associations at the regional levels. The United States Bocce Federation is a member of the Federation Internationale de Boules - F.I.B. (International Bocce Federation - Volo/Lyonnaise World Bocce Federation) and the Confederazione Boccistica Internazionale (Raffa World Bocce Federation). American national teams have competed in world championships (Figure above: Joe Nelson and Marco Cuneo , California). The United States, in terms of its bocce sport potential, could place itself much higher up within the world’s bocce hierarchy. Volo/Lyonnaise bocce is played very rarely, and in Washington State doesn’t exist at all. The Seattle Bocce Project is a serious and significant athletic and social initiative for implementing Volo/Lyonnaise bocce in the United States.

WORLD GAMES HISTORY Greek colonists brought bocce with them to what is now modernItaly. bocce frequently lost and gained popularity throughout the ages.
    http://www.specialolympics.org/sports/w_bocce.html
Bocce Bocce is a game of skill and strategy. There may be anywhere from two to four to eight players in a game. Each player is given two balls (boccia) and then must take turns rolling (lagging) the ball toward the pallino ball (the smallest ball), which has already been thrown onto the field. The players are given points for the balls thrown closest to the pallino ball. Players may also throw on the fly (volo), striking the ball to move the point ball. Balls, including the pallino, may also be displaced by the balls of other players. According to the Special Olympics census, there are approximately 9,502 athletes participating in this sport around the world. The athletes training and competing in this and other Special Olympics sports are provided with a safe, quality and dignified sports environment with numerous competitive opportunities. Training for local, state, regional and national competitions provides all athletes with opportunities for success.
    WORLD GAMES HISTORY
Greek colonists brought Bocce with them to what is now modern Italy. It was Giussepi Garibaldi, who, while unifying and nationalizing Italy, popularized the sport, as it is known today. Bocce frequently lost and gained popularity throughout the ages. In 1896, during a resurgence of popularity, the first Bocce Olympiad was held in Athens, Greece. Bocce has been a part of international sports ever since. Bocce is one of Special Olympics newer sports, having being introduced at the World Games level for the first time in 1991. In 1999, Raleigh, North Carolina hosted the Special Olympics World Summer Games with 189 athletes from 33 countries participating in bocce.

Bocce, pronounced "botch-ee," is a lawn game that harks from the Brutocao family's ancestral home of Italy. The game's lineage can be traced back to the 1500s, and its endurance testifies to its enjoyment. The popularity of Bocce today is such that it is recognized by International Olympic Committee as a competitive sport! At Brutocao Cellars, we take Bocce seriously. Our Bocce courts at Schoolhouse Plaza have been sanctioned by the California North Coast Bocce Federation, a subsidiary of the United States Bocce Federation. Great wines, magnificent wine country, pristine lawns: come enjoy the world-class Mendocino County wines from Brutocao and play a game on our regulation courts. Visitors can play on the lighted courts at $20.00 per court, and can reserve courts ahead of time. There is staff on hand to explain the rules. Bocce fans can sign up for two levels of membership at the courts, and will receive discounts on court time as well as events at the winery, wines, use of the winery's conference facilities. 08/03/2001 - Updated 07:49 AM ET The world is their crushed oyster shell By Marco R. della Cava, USA TODAY "It's low-maintenance, and our three kids just love it," says Susie Roy, who lives in Mill Valley, Calif., just outside San Francisco. "Besides, what other outdoor game can you play with a glass of wine in your hand?" Similar to British lawn bowling and the French pétanque , Italy's bocce (pronounced bo-chay) involves rolling grapefruit-size balls as close as possible to a smaller white ball, or pallino. Touch it and that's a vaunted "kiss." The USA has a few hundred public and private bocce courts, and even fields teams in international competitions. But this ancient game is rapidly moving beyond the cloistered walls of Italian-American social clubs. While Northern California appears to be spearheading the backyard court trend, interest is on the rise nationwide.

What is Bocce Bocce is 70 centuries old and so are the arguments that go with it. Bocce, the bowling game of the Caesar's, isn't a sport. It is an excuse - an excuse to get out of the house for several hours, to sip a glass of wine, to bet a few lira and to provide fuel for the universal Italian hobby of arguing. Bocce is the direct ancestor of such games as bowling, lawn bowling, duck pins and candle pins. It also could be called the stepfather of such modern pastimes as curling, shuffleboard and horse shoe pitching.
