Later that year we expanded to 6 teams, with the addition of the Vipers and the Hackers. In 1991 we sent a team to the 1st World Broomball Championships in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, some 15 players from Adelaide represented Australia. 1995 saw 2 members from Adelaide attend the Broomball Mania VIII, held in the USA. Followed up by a further three representitives (and only Australians) to the 2nd World broomball Tournament in in Victoria, British Columbia in 1996. Adelaide was the host of the 1998 Australian Broomball Championships which will be held in from June 5th - 8th. This event was unfortunately won by the ACT in both the Men's and Coed divisions. The 1998 World Broomball Tournament (III) held in Bolzano Italy, was attended by 3 more members from Adelaide (again the only Australians) joining a Coed team with members from many other parts of the world.

Junior Broomball Broomball Events A Bit of History by Gary Hadwen e-mail: hadwen@sympatico.ca CFB Trenton played broomball prior to 1970, but the first organized league in Trenton began in the 1970-71 season at the arena on the Base. In the beginning, the four or five civilian teams were fairly competitive with each other but they were no match for the CFB Trenton team, which won several military championships during those first few years. One of the teams, eventually sponsored by Custom Auto Body, improved enough to become competitive with the base team, even defeating them on occasion. Beginning in the 1974-75 season, Custom Auto Body scored a record three-year run of going undefeated during regular season and playoffs. They were still undefeated when the league disbanded following the 1976-77 season.

What in the world is Broomball
Well, it's not hockey , but there are many similarities between it and hockey. It's not curling , although curling is also played on ice and the curling players also use brooms. What it is , is a whole lot of fun . You don't need skates (or to know how to skate). And it isn't just for guys. In fact most leagues are what is called mixed (or co-ed). It doesn't involve checking or getting beat up, although there are men's and women's checking leagues, if you like that sort of thing. Mixed is never a checking league, in fact only minor incidental contact is allowed in mixed leagues. Broomball is played on a regulation ice sheet, as is hockey. It uses the same centerline (redline), offsides lines (bluelines) and goal lines as hockey, and the goals are placed in a crease located in the center of the ice, on the goallines, just like hockey. But the goals are bigger than hockey goals, usually 6' x 8', but some leagues use a 5' x 7' goal.
Instead of a hard puck, broomball is played with an inflated ball. And instead of a hockey stick we use (yes you guessed it) a specially made broom. The broom head used to be made of straw that was then dipped in a rubber coating, but most players have switched to the specialized rubber headed brooms. These brooms have a specially made, rubber head. In fact the newest thing in brooms is a special curved broom recently introduced. The handles are made from either wood or aluminum. The wood handles come in two thicknesses and are generally round, though the new curved head brroms have to flats on the handles to help you orient the head correctly. The aluminum handles are made from hollow, round aluminum tubing.

This fun and exciting game is much like hockey but no skates and no knowledge of skating or stick-handling is needed! Broomball is played indoors on an ice hockey rink or outdoors on frozen ponds or lakes with rules very similar to Ice Hockey. Players wear tennis shoes, use a ball which is sized somewhere between a soccer ball and slow pitch softball, and use specially designed manufactured brooms which are made of wood or aluminum. The goal, like hockey, is to put the ball in the opposing net. For more information

broomball Home About Broomball Pics page What's BROOM'in ... Guest Book Everything Broomball Is!!!!!!!
The sport of broomball originated in Canada in the early 1900's. Since then, that crude form of the sport has grown into a popular sport on all levels. Men's women's and coed teams participate both competitively and recreationally.
Many of us have been exposed to broomball in an entertainment sense where, local media celebrities combat against one another on an ice rink where they play with house brooms and a recreation ball. However, when people witness the silly antics of their nightly news person slipping to the seat of his pants, few of them realize that what they are seeing is the crude form of an actual sport which is sweeping the country.
Broomball is played on an ice hockey rink with rules and strategies similar to those of hockey. Players wear padded sponge-rubber shoes, to enhance traction on the slippery surface, and strike a ball the size of a small soccer ball with specially designed brooms made of corn-straw dipped in rubber or solid molded rubber, trying to score into a net which is guarded by a goal-tender.
In Your Area
Ice arena managers across the country have discovered the benefits of adding a broomball program to fill vacant ice time. Arenas in shopping malls and close to college campuses have been especially successful in setting up recreational programs in consistently empty time slots, and find them expanding into popular attractions. This strategey is not exclusive to northern climates. In fact, some of the best young broomball programs exist in areas of California, North Carolina, Texas, Oklahoma, and even Florida.
