The Anthropology of Form and Meaning
245 pp. / 6 1/8 x 9 1/4 / 1997 (2nd ptg.)
Paper (0-8165-1652-9) $18.95s Virginia Quarterly Review Choice Journal of Anthropological Research The matador flourishes his cape, the bull charges, the crowd cheers: this is the image of Spain best known to the world. But while the bull has long been a symbol of Spanish culture, it carries more meaning than has previously been recognized. In this book, anthropologist Carrie B. Douglass views bulls and bullfighting as a means of discussing fundamental oppositions in Spanish society and explains the political significance of those issues for one of Europe's most regionalized countries. In talking about bulls and bullfighting, observes Douglass, one ends up talking not only about differences in region, class, and politics in Spain but also about that country's ongoing struggle between modernity and tradition. She relates how Spaniards and outsiders see bullfighting as representative of a traditional, irrational Spain contrasted with a more civilized Europe, and she shows how Spaniards' ambivalence about bullfighting is actually a way of expressing ambivalence about the loss of traditional culture in a modern world. To fully explore the symbolism of bulls and bullfighting, Douglass offers an overview of Spain's fiesta cycle, in which the bull is central. She broadly and meticulously details three different fiestas through ethnographic fieldwork conducted over a number of years, delineating the differences in festivals held in different regions. She also shows how a cycle of these fiestas may hold the key to resolving some of Spain's fundamental political contradictions by uniting the different regions of Spain and reconciling opposing political campsthe right, which holds that there is one Spain, and the left, which contends that there are many.

The Art/Sport of Bullfighting
Can you tell yet what my views on bull fighting are? Let's just say "not favourable" and give me chance to tell you why, along with the unbiassed facts behind it all, OK - and some biassed facts too. First, before someone tells me supporters don't call it a "sport", it's an art, if you pay for satelite TV here in Spain, you could end up having three bull fights a day on the Spanish "sports" channel. So, whilst Spain is one of the countries most connected with bullfighting (along with Portugal, Mexico and France, Colombia, Venezuela, Peru, Guatemala and Panama to name a few), many Spanish councils have banned any form of bullfighting in their regions and I am happy to say that the Canarian government has banned all forms of fiestas and sporting events involving bulls. So, if you were looking forward to seeing a bullfight, you won't see one here on Gran Canaria or any of the other Canary islands. A long time ago, I thought bullfighting involved letting a bull loose in a ring with the "matador" who then had to dodge it using his cape whilst trying to weaken it with a sword, eventually killing it. If that's all it was, bad enough as that is, I could see why it is termed as a "sport". That's far from what happens though. Here are the "unbiassed" facts with anything biassed in (brackets).

Spain's bullfighting season is in the spring and summer. Traditionally fight).External link La Tauromaquia (The Art of bullfighting).
http://www.european-schoolprojects.net/festivals/Spain/summer/bull.htm
Spain's bullfighting season is in the spring and summer. Traditionally, the bullfight is a combination of ritual and mortal combat, with an attempt, at the risk of the Matador's life, to manoeuvre a bull gracefully and kill it in a manner both courageous and aesthetically acceptable. Bullfighting is confined largely to Spain and to Spanish-speaking countries such as Mexico where the bullfight is known as la fiesta brava ("the brave festival") or la corrida de toros ("the running of the bulls"). Usually there are six bulls, to be killed by three matadors, for one afternoon's corrida, and each encounter lasts about 15 minutes. Today the bullfight is much the same as it has been since about 1726, when Francisco Romero of Ronda, Spain, introduced the estoque (the sword) and the muleta (the small, more easily wielded worsted cape used in the last part of the fight). Intro Bullfighting Fiestas Flamenco ... White Villages Bullfighting The origins of bullfighting date back hundreds of years to the time when wealthy gentlemen would pit their wits against wild bulls, using only their own horses and a lance. However it was left to Ronda -born Francisco Romero to lend bullfighting its contemporary structure. The sport is fought in the traditional Plaza De Toros (bullring) and aficionados claim that it is more a dramatic form of theatre with style and grace than a barbaric blood-sport.
Mijas Bullring The drama can be broken down into four acts and a prologue, which features the cast of Matadors, three per fight, each of which will attempt to kill two bulls during the course of the corrida (fight). Also in the procession are the mounted Picadors who lance the bull's neck to weaken it, as well as Banderillos whose task it is to stick coloured darts into its back. There are also various assistants to aid with activities such as tending to the horses and disposing of the dead bulls. All this is accompanied by traditional Spanish music which stirs and rallies the crowd for the afternoon's bloody "entertainment". Before the festivities can begin an official, the Alguacil, in costume and cape receives a key thrown down from the president of the fight as a signal to start the first act.

festivals ... translations Many people think that bullfighting is cruel, and in a way it is. However, not all bulls that are raised on farms end up in a bullfighting ring. Many bulls are not good for bullfighting, and others are too good and are kept for breeding. Think of it this way, who would raise a bull if you could not make money out it? Without bullfighting bulls would be an extinct relic found only in museums and zoos.
Bullfighting In the Mediterranean, sacrificing bulls is a practice that dates back to pre-historic times. In Greece for example, killing the minotaur is symbolic of a bullfight. However, some people like to make a connection between the bullfighting and the Roman shows.
Bullfighting as we know it today started in the village squares, and became formalised with the building of the bullring in Ronda in the late 18th century. From that time, it began to follow a particular sequence of events: the entrance of the bull, the picador, the banderilleros, and finally the matador (bullfighter). Many of the picadors' horses were injured in the early days, so these heavy horses now wear protection.
Bullfighting must be understood as an art where the bullfighter dominates the bull and makes him do what the bullfighter wants. A good bullfighter will stay close to the bull and won't move on the bull as it is passing by. However, the real victory is the act of killing the bull, which should be done at once and with the bull dying within a few seconds.

Bullfighting
Bullfighting is a sport involving a bullfighter, or matador, that provokes and fights a bull in a public arena by waving a red cape, whereby forcing the animal to charge. Although bullfighting is the most popular in Spain, where it is the national sport, it is also a favorite spectator activity in Mexico and other parts of Latin America as well as in Portugal and southern France. Bullfighters originally rode horses until a common Spanish laborer killed a bull with a sword while on foot. These days, matadors do not kill the bull. This section features various resources on bullfighting.
