courtesy of the artist Headquartered in Northern Virginia, the Piedmont Driving Club was formed in 1982 for the carriage driving enthusiast to enjoy monthly carriage outings, driving competition, educational clinics, and participation in fun community events. Our driving takes place in the beautiful countryside of the historic Piedmont Fox Hunt country on the quiet gravel roads of Loudoun County, as well as Fauquier and Clarke Counties, Virginia. We host the oldest annual ADS rated driving show on the East Coast, and driving clinics are scheduled throughout the season, offering a wide range of educational opportunities from understanding wheel care to learning proper turnout. Our membership year is from January 1st to December 31st, and includes a monthly newsletter. Picnic drives typically take place during the warmer seasons, beginning in April and concluding in October, and are for members only. Driving during July and August are generally scheduled to coincide with the cooler temperatures of the morning or evening. Winter months are enjoyed inside with group functions, clinics and lectures. http://www.sorell.tco.asn.au/leatherwood/combineddriving.htm
Combined Driving Combined driving is a carriage driving competition based on ridden eventing and is a three part competition staged overe 1, 2, or 3 days. It is the fastest growing horse competition in the world and has a very big following in Europe and North America providing a special opportunity for competitors who are seeking an extra challenge. It is also great fun for the spectators and helpers. CDEs are held in every state in Australia and the Leatherwood CDE is becoming an annual event. CDEs are great levellers where money does not guarantee success and the best laid plans frequently come unstuck! Competition A - Presentation in which the whole turnout (horse, vehicle, harness, driver and groom) is judged. This is followed by Dressage which is designed to test the quality of movement, education of the horse and the skill of the driver whilst performing specified movements in an arena. Competition B - The Marathon which has the greatest spectator appeal. A course of up to 22km. may follow roads, tracks and even go cross country and is divided into sections with time limits and penalties for not maintaining the required pace. The final section may contain up to eight obstacles incorporating natural and constructed features with uneven ground, water, trees, gates etc. to increase the degree of difficulty and are negotiated against the clock. Competition C - Cone Driving is designed to prove the horse is still fit

VEHICLE ASSOCIATION
January 11th, 2003 "Ask the Experts"
Basic Equine Nutrition hosted by Matt Rorabaugh Approximately 20 MHDVA members came down to Cubby Jack's restaurant in Lansing to hear a mini seminar given by Matt Rorabaugh. Matt is an Equine Nutrition Specialist for Purina Mills animal feeds, he owns a breeding farm of his own called Twin Creek Farms north of Gr. Rapids and raised mostly Arabs, but from what I understand you could find just about any breed on his farm.
Risk factors for colic:
Change in diet 5 times more susceptible to colic
Change in hay 9.8 times
Previous Colic 3.9 times
Being an Arab (interesting) 2.1 times
Weather change 3.2 times Matt suggests that horses should have small frequent meals and that hay should be fed first to create saliva to "buffer" the esophagus and stomach. The horse should chew its hay for 10-15 minutes before getting its grain. Water, all horse need access to fresh water daily. Did you know - A Mature idle horse needs 5-10 gals of water a day?
