Cavediving Overview Contents: Overview - Why This Web? Cave, cavern, nitrox and technical scuba diving instruction as well as scuba regulator repair, oxygen cleaning and cave diving travel to the Yucatan are the primary topics of this website. Over the years, I have received so many inquires about my services, diving in the overhead environment, and technical diving, that I thought it was time to put the internet to work with some of the answers. By way of introduction, my name is Steve Poll. I am an experienced cave diving instructor, instructor trainer, technical diving instructor, equipment specialist, cave diving guide and former dive shop owner. I am one of a relatively few full time cave diving instructors. I issue certifications for all cave and technical agencies in this country as well as some open water agencies. I am conveniently located in North Central Florida right in the heart of Cave Country. Whether you want to dive hard and far, or just set a conservative pace and work at your own comfort level. I'll tailor the course to your needs. I am the recipient of both the Abe Davis and Wakulla Awards for safe cave diving, and I'm the Chairman of the NACD (National Association for Cave Diving) International Safety Program. Training a good diver safely is my main concern.

IANTD Safety Message
Warning Diving in underwater caves is an ulta-hazardous activity. No one should dive in caves without proper training and equipment. No amount of open water experience can prepare you for the cave environment. Many Open Water Dive Masters and Instructors have died intending to explore underwater caves. Fact Open Water Divers have a very bad safety record in caves when they have not been thoroughly Cave trained and certified. These springs have been under some controversy as of late concerning their "openness". The final word, is that it is closed due to the landowner, but it really is open because the landowner doesn't own the land that the spring is actually on. We are trying to get further clarification on this point. This is a pretty cave. There is a large tree in the entrance pool, which makes for a pretty exit. The downstream is pretty, but gets rather low, and supposedly the upstream is side-mount country, though some say otherwise. Look at a

Next "The Darkness Beckons" (to steal a title from Martin Farr) by Steve Pearson "We thought you must be dead" the first words uttered to me by Paul Neilsen the morning of my IANTD 'full cave' course. It transpired that my message the night before, that I would be travelling up that morning, rather than the previous evening, had not been passed on. This had however turned out to be a rather smart move as the local accommodation left something to be desired. Actually the 'trailer' was pretty comfortable, the problem was 2 beds, 5 guys. My extra night in 5 star luxury being considerably better than a night on the floor of the trailer. Anyway we'd come to Florida for world class cave diving not to be pampered I was busily assembling my equipment mulling over the effort that would be required to lug the twin 19L steel cylinders, that were now receiving 9,120 litres of EANx36 (yes they fill them to 240bar) from the filling whip, when I casually walked over to the van we'd hired to have a look round. Shit....the others all had either twin 15's or 17's. The Bastards had left me the 19's (or 121's as there known there) the only set available. At least we all had the same deco cylinders steel 12L jobs filled with pure oxygen. None of that mamby pamby EANx80 stuff here obviously..!! serious kit, for serious diving...

http://www.hazelsbugs.com/cave_diving.htm
Cave Diving
Cav e diving is a dangerous sport, in the last 30 years, more than 300 people have died. In nearly all cases, these people died due to a lack of training. It takes a lot of additional training, beyond anything you may have learned open-water diving (including at the Diving Instructor level), in order to enter a cave. However... with all that said, cave diving can be the most thrilling experience in the world, as you float weightless through some of the most spectacular caves on Earth. If you are interested in becoming a cave diver, the first step is to get certified for open-water diving with a training agency such as PADI or NAUI . Once you have that training - dive, dive, dive. Get comfortable with the gear, breathing through the tube, and most importantly get perfect buoyancy control (the last thing you want to do in a cave is crash into the floor and stir up a cloud of silt!). Once you are comfortable (which for most people is a minimum of 100 open-water dives), it's time to get Cave Dive certified. The National Speleological Society Cave Diving Section has a certification program. In this program you'll receive training through four levels, which takes one to two weeks of training. At which time you'll be able to enter an underwater cave. But that doesn't mean you're a cave diver - it just means you are beginning to learn...

http://www.scubatravel.co.uk/cave/
Cave Diving in France: Tea and Medals The Dordogne/Lot area is one of the greatest cave diving areas in the world. The three rivers, Dordogne, Lot and Céle in the central, southern region of France offer over a dozen classic cave dives including some of the longest and deepest "siphons" in the country, if not Europe: Emergence du Russel; La Doux de Coly; Trou Madam; Gouffre de Cabouy; Gouffre de St Sauveur; Fontain de St George; Oeil de la Doue are some of the evocative names given to these sites that are peppered throughout the region. The Dordogne region has been at the forefront of European cave diving developments and exploration for decades. The depths of Emergence du Russel, for example, were plumbed in the seventies to more than 70m. Toe-curling epic dives have been executed using innovations such as half a dozen 'jumbo rigged' 20 litre cylinders, twin re-breather gear and doubled-up underwater scooters. People have successfully penetrated thousands of metres into these systems, reaching amazing depths of 80 m during dives that have lasted several hours. Some of these adventures are testament to the teamwork of dedicated diving groups whilst others are the achievements of rugged individuals. Martyn Farr's book The Darkness Beckons describes some of the classic milestones achieved by these legends.

Cocklebiddy Cave Diving Expedition 1995

In September 1995, a nine member team made what is only the third ever dive beyond Toad Hall, extending the existing line by only 20 metres before finding the apparent end of the cave. The team consisted of: Chris Brown (third sump diver and team leader), David Doolette, Tim Payne, Stefan Eberhard, Wolf Seidel (Toad Hall support team), Richard McDonald, Dennis Thamm, Brenton Woolcock (Rockpile support team) and Peter Girdler (surface manager). The team was accompanied by a larger contingent of television crew who filmed above ground and as far as the Rockpile for a television documentary and for news coverage. On Tuesday and Wednesday setup dives were made by all eight divers to the Rockpile. On each day, the three sleds, laden with kit, were towed by either Aquamac scooters or Teknas into the Rockpile, a trip lasting about 40 minutes one way, and six to eight hours spent carrying equipment across the Rockpile. These were long days, the divers leaving for the entrance lake mid-morning and not returning until 3:00am the next morning. On the Wednesday, the aquazep and two aquamac scooters and two of the sleds were also carried across the Rockpile and made ready to dive the second sump. Used scooter batteries were removed and returned to the entrance lake for recharging during the rest day on Thursday. Richard, Dennis and Brenton met us at the Rockpile, and some gear was carried across for a subsequent second sump dive by the support divers. We returned through the first sump by Tekna to the lake entrance, arriving at about 3:00am, and climbed up to the plain, not quite three days after entering the cave.
