Introduction to rock climbing in Jersey
T he island of Jersey provides a really special and enjoyable climbing experience. This is partly due to the sheer quality of the rock, the routes and the beautiful setting, but is more especially to do with its peaceful and unspoilt nature. Unusually, for what is technically a British climbing area, Jersey rock climbing is fairly recent compared to the mountain areas where rock climbing has existed for hundreds of years, or even Cornwall where the first routes date from 1902. C limbing development had been sporadic and infrequent between the first routes in the early 1960s, and the explosion of activity beginning in the mid-1980s. S ince the 1984 rediscovery, a small number of visitors, and an active group of local climbers have established the island as one of the finest British sea cliff climbing areas, with a number of brilliant routes, at a variety of grades, which compare with any to be found in the more traditional areas.

Hi there, Cactus is a small specialist manufacturer of outdoor equipment established in 1992 here in New Zealand. We produce chiefly sewn products ranging from the best climbing and snowboarding packs to fleece clothing and Dreadnoughts - the worlds strongest trousers. We design and make really good things and supply these to anybody on the planet who needs fine, strong equipment. We aim to keep doing this, enjoy the creative process, keep our web site simple and make enough money to carry on doing it while having a fair amount of holiday time to climb, bike and surf etc. Recently we've been looking afield to export our product so we can keep our niche focus. Cactus products are now available in Australia through the Patagonia and Mountain Equipment chains of stores and Worldwide Direct through this website. On a personal level Gwilym (design) lives in Wanaka and likes going to Arapiles, Ben (finance) has been living the "good life" on his farmlet and Rob (sales) has been searching for new surf breaks close to Christchurch.

On August 8, 2000, I climbed to the top of Mt. St. Helens. I wanted to share the climb so others would have a better idea of what this type of climb is like. There are several pages on my site which show you what it is like along the route to the top. I’ve also included some links for more information on Mt. St. Helens and climbing it. I couldn’t have made the climb without the help of others, including my Dad, Brad and Jenni, Brian and Kelly, Kim and William. I really want to thank Brad and Jenni our climb leaders. I hope you enjoy this site and that you too make it to the top. Chris O’Neil Index Route Bivouac Forest Trail ... Links

Double-butterfly Knot
Double-butterfly Knot (and variations thereof) by Ron Kilber rpknet@aztec.asu.edu T he Double-butterfly Knot is, in my humble opinion, the best mid-line knot for rigging equalized anchors. I've been researching for years now, and no where have I found evidence of the existence or use of this knot, and until I find such, I'm laying claim to be the inventor. As one friend of mine put it, "You mean after 450,000 years of human habitation on earth, it's actually possible that not all knot variations have been invented yet?" Well, the Double-butterfly Knot is proof-positive. Isn't it? In 1994, I presented the Double-butterfly Knot to Jim Bridwell when we met at Yosemite National Park. Naturally, he assumed I was going to show him a knot that he already knew, but he had never heard of it before, and was actually surprised that such a knot was possible. Pictured below is the Double-butterfly Knot, configured to equalize two anchors using only the climbing rope. Notice the optional clove-hitch rigging! CAUTION! The Double-butterfly Knot is a mid-line knot, and accordingly should never be used as an end-line knot, unless, of course, precaution is taken to secure the unused end!

Celebrating 50 Years of Everest Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay Sherpa made history on May 29, 1953, when they reached the summit of Mount Everest from Nepal via the Western Cwm and South Col. This June, Hillary and an impressive roster of 50 Everest climbers will gather in San Francisco for the official North American celebration of the 50th anniversary of that first ascent of the highest mountain on earth Antarctica: Vinson First Ascent Relive Robert Anderson's spectacular first ascent of a new route on the south face of Mount Vinson. The team put in 52 climbing hours during a four-day period that first saw them turned back with the summit in sight, then reach the top on their second try. It's a story of triumph for a team that refused to give in Brad Washburn: On High Truly one of the great explorers of our time, Brad Washburn shares his amazing photography with the world next month at a gallery showing in London.
