Wimbledon is on our screens again and right on cue Namco have released Anna Kournikova’s Smash Court Tennis . What a licence! The lovely lady herself adorns the box and features in the game’s intro. Not only have Namco signed up Tennis’ number one blonde beauty, but they’ve also managed to produce one of the best tennis games to grace our screens in recent years. Smash Court Tennis adopts a very cute and pretty unspectacular visual style. Whilst there’s no visual whiz-bang, the game has been superbly designed with over 20 cute characters from which to select. Each court is nicely designed with its own unique look and feel. But it’s not graphics that make this game, it’s the insanely addictive gameplay. The game boasts an impressive range of shots – topspin, flat, lobs, volleys, inside-outs kick-serves – and yet is still incredibly easy to get into. Serving is a good example of the beautifully simple yet precise method of control employed by the game. One press of the button throws the ball into the air and then by pressing a second a variety of serves can be executed. However, it’s not as easy as it sounds. You have to time hitting the ball at the optimum moment as it drops. It’s easy to serve but to serve really well takes practice. This is an example of a game which is really, really

Big servers now dominate grass court tournaments and very few high profile events are played on the surface. Is the era of grass coming to an end?
Join in more Wimbledon debates here With the big servers able to dominate on grass and play a relatively dull style of tennis, calls have been made to end the use of grass courts. The surface is hard to maintain and is only suited to certain players' styles. Wimbledon regularly misses out on some of the world's top players as they cannot cope with the demands of grass. Not only this, but grass courts are greatly affected by weather conditions that can slow down the progress of events and keep spectators hanging around. Should grass courts be consigned to history? We need fast court tennis with low bounces - which encourges players to volley and use slice both off the ground and off the serve. Long rallies with players hitting hard is very taxing on the body, serving and volleying at least in theory makes it much easier(in terms of energy expenditure) to win points.

Serve's up! Smash Court Tennis hits the 'net The official site for Namco's fuzzy yellow ball-beater is not only up and running, but it's also wielding a racquet and a mean backhand to boot. xx_keywords_xx Bouncing into games emporiums this week is Smash Court Tennis Pro Tournament, Namco's much-anticipated PS2 update of the classic PS one tennis title. As is that wasn't excuse enough for you to start donning an 80s-style sweatband and a whiter-than-white shorts 'n' T-shirt combo out of sheer excitement (like we did), a gorgeous has also been launched that's just chock-full of tennis-flavoured goodness. Scrumptious. It's essential that you have Macromedia Flash Player installed on your computer if you want to gain access to the site, but it's definitely worth it if you want to watch the extremely slick intro sequence and scoot around the impressive 3D menu environments. Once that's out of the way, your first port of call should be the Tournaments section, where you can choose to pay a visit to Melbourne, London, Quebec or New York and check out how the differing venues' playing surfaces (i.e. grass, clay, hard, quicksand - only kidding) will impact your game and strategy. In addition, you'll receive vital playing tips and special shot information if you make a dash for the Coaching area - ideal if you want to gain the edge over your ill-trained opponents. If it's instant gratification you're after, head over to the Locker Room for screenshots, wallpaper downloads and profiles of the eight featured professional players. Did you know, for example, that female pro Lindsay Davenport is in fact heavier than Andre Agassi? Or that Anna Kournikova is really good looking?

Smash Court Tennis Pro Tournament Namco unzips its racquet cover, takes a long swig of lemon barley and prepares to unleash a slice of unmissable sporting action on PS2. xx_keywords_xx html:Publisher: SCEE
Developer: Namco
Release date: June 2002 Namco is not a company best known for its sporting output. For years, the stalwart Japanese developer has shunned the lucrative but increasingly crowded arenas of football, basketball and ice hockey in favour of sublime racing thrills and visceral beat 'em up experiences. One sport that the king of coin-op has turned its hand to in the past, however, is tennis and the resulting Anna Kournikova Smash Court Tennis gave PlayStation owners hours of quality racquet-on-ball action. Now, with Wimbledon just a couple of short months away, Namco is readying the series' debut PS2 offering for the coming season. Quiet on court, please... Smash Court Tennis (SCT), in keeping with its Namco stablemates, excels in two key areas; graphical loveliness and inherent arcade-style playability. The cartoony visuals seen in Smash Court games of yore have been replaced with slick next gen graphics, both on and off court. The licensed pro players are recognisable, not only from their appearance, but also from the unique animations that capture their individual playing style. The courts, stadiums and crowds all look very respectable and lend the game a realism and atmosphere that was somewhat lacking from its Smash Court predecessors. Small touches of Namco genius give the whole affair a polished sheen. Example: when you're on Match point, the DualShock shudders gently at regular intervals, mirroring the concerned heart beat of your psyched opponent... Meanwhile, a doubles option and Multitap support for up to four players ensures that SCT is also a winner in the multiplayer stakes. Get limbering up for some balls to the wall thrills this June.

Be Fun to Have On Court One of the biggest advantages tennis has over many other sports is that you only need to round up one other person (or three for doubles) in order to have a game. Even so, some players have a hard time getting a game, either because they can't find opponents of similar skill or because they're just not much fun to have on the court, lacking understanding of some points of tennis etiquette. I'll address the latter problem here by looking at some often-overlooked rules of on-court behavior. Tennis has its official rules , then it has The Code of Tennis , the unofficial rules of good tennis sportsmanship. Any serious player should take the time to read both. I've seen all too many players argue adamantly about a rule on which they were completely wrong. Players who don't understand the rules, or worse, The Code, are more likely to experience a gradually shrinking pool of opponents. The points of tennis etiquette I'll bring up here sometimes overlap and sometimes refine parts of The Code. This will be far from comprehensive. Instead, I will concentrate on a few issues that I see come up most frequently.

Playing Tennis Without a Court Finding an open tennis court isn't always easy. Most of us have run into situations where we showed up to play, then found no court available. Here are a few off-court tennis games and drills you can use to make the best of such situations. String Catch: Learning to catch a ball on your strings is lots of fun and also useful in that it develops a good feel for softening the racquet-ball impact as one would do for a drop shot or drop volley. Start around 10 feet from your partner.
  • Hit the ball gently toward your partner's forehand side, around waist-high.
  • He tries to catch the ball on his strings, preferably without any detectable bounce.
