Nebline Newsletter Article Yikes! Jumpin' Jiminy Crickets!
This article was submitted by Barb Ogg, PhD, Extension Educator, University of Nebraska Cooperative Extension in Lancaster County. The article appeared in the Nebline Newsletter. Dates: January 1996 and updated October 1998. Have you learned to open and close doors quickly to keep the crickets outside. Is there a chirping cricket hiding somewhere in the house, but you can't find it because it stops chirping when you walk near it. You aren't alone. This is the second year in a row that we have seen large crickets infestationsespecially in more rural areas or where homes are near fields or pastures. Why have there been so many crickets. We don't really know. Many insects have cycles when their populations increase temporarily in response to favorable conditions and later adjust to more normal levels. Most people think that insect outbreaks are related to weather conditions, but increases in the abundance of food and habitat, or decreases in natural enemies are just as likely to trigger population explosions. The truth is that, with the exception of economic pests, most insects are not well studied and entomologists don't know for sure what conditions trigger insect outbreaks.

Close, but no cigar...
By PATRICK ANDREWS
It has been a long wait for the first great PC cricket game. While soccer and various American sports are represented by an ever more realistic string of games, the thwack of leather on willow, the clunk of leather on helmet and the jingle of bookmakers' money into leather wallets have never quite made a satisfactory transition from lush playing fields to cyberspace. The International Cricket Captain series is quite accomplished, but cricket management? Now, there's a niche market for you Shane Warne Cricket '99 (a southern hemisphere version of Brian Lara Cricket) can't quite claim gaming greatness but it is probably the best effort yet, offering a better-looking version of the Playstation title of the same name and, in this reviewer's mind, a better-playing title than the disappointing Cricket World Cup. It is packed with options - 240 players with real names and statistics, 46 stadiums, 15 international teams, variable weather and the option to play anything from a 10-over-a-side slog to a Test series. You can play as South Africa in the World Cup and flog everyone in sight until the games that count, or try to rewrite the history of the game by replaying classic matches.

It all began way back in Melbourne on the 15th of March 1877 , just as a matter of interest, Australia won the game by 45 runs. However it wasn't until 1882, 5 years later, that the 'Ashes' were born as we know them today. If you'd like to know how the

Latest News: Group fixtures finalised for ECC Indoor Championships
Austria will take on Portugal, twice winners of the ECC Indoors Championships, in the opening fixture in the ECC Indoor Championships to be held in Herning, Denmark. Austria has had an instrumental role in the development of the championships, holding the first ever European Indoor Championships, in 1995, on a boat on the Danube. In 1996, Austria won the European Championships, winning the competition at the Lords Indoor School. More... Congratulations to Pakistan Falken CC on becoming Open League champions for the first time, and to Lords CC for winning the ACA Trophy (Northern Division), and to Salzburg CC for winning the ACA Trophy (Southern Division)! For a full season review click here Welcome to the official homepage of the Austrian Cricket Association, which contains news and information about cricket in Austria, including fixtures, results, the National Team, youth cricket and indoor cricket, as well as various pictures from cricket matches in Austria. Austria's cricketing history, although by no means as lengthy as that of major cricketing countries, has seen the sport change from being a sport played by enthusiastic ex-patriots, to a sport in which Austrians rub shoulders with and often outshine their non-Austrian teammates and opponents! The country currently boasts four dedicated cricket grounds (3 in Vienna and Lower Austria and one in Carinthia), and various indoor halls used for indoor training and indoor cricket tournaments.

Cricket at the MCG
The Melbourne Cricket Club has a history of being first. It was the first club in Victoria (1838) and hosted the first match between Victoria and New South Wales in 1856, the first match against an English XI in 1862 and, of course, the first Test between Australia and England in 1877. The club launched football, introduced state and national bowls and tennis classics, staged a Davis Cup tie, promoted cricket tours to and from England, played host for an Olympic Games, encouraged visits by international baseball teams and provided a venue for such diverse sporting pursuits as track cycling and lacrosse.
