Before You Try SkiJoring With Your Dog Skijoring is a traditional nordic ski sport that is enjoying a modern resurgence, as the basic sport of cross country skiing has grown in popularity and recreational XC skiers have realized that skiing with canine friends is great exercise for both themselves and their pooch. Before you hit the trails to ski-jor, learn more here about skijoring basics, skijoring equipment and commands. What is SkiJoring?
Skijor (ski-jur) is a Norwegian word that means "ski-driving" and the sport of skijoring is a combination of dogsledding and XC skiing. A pulling dog or team of 2 dogs is attached via a harness and bungee cord system similar to those on sled dogs, with a XC skier attached at the other end. Horse skijoring is another form of the sport, but skijoring behind any type of motorized vehicle is NOT safe. What Type of Dog is Good for SkiJoring?

Meditative Simulated Cross-Country Skiing
Wednesday, 12 Jun 2002. Coney island, snacks, and anger. By Paul Ford A day later David was at the YMCA again, on the machine that simulated cross-country skiing. During his first few visits here he'd favored the treadmill, partly because it was at the back of the upstairs exercise room, and he could stumble on it unobserved. But after a week, when his shame at simply existing among the more lithe had diminished, he admitted that the treadmill was a poor choice. Fast walking left his legs feeling as if they were about to explode, giving him horror-movie visions of gore spraying out of his calves, covering the rear wall with red as he held the treadmill screaming in agony, stared at by the Y employees and the other exercisers. That pain kept him from going fast enough to break into a sweat, and as Alan, his friend and now trainer, said, it was all about sweat, about becoming a filthy dripping puddle of a man. With its different length of stride, jogging on the treadmill didn't hurt as much, but it wore him out so quickly - in minutes, he was staggering - it was worthless. His running pace was a pantomime of a man trying to escape a industrial ketchup accident, and as he loped, keeping up with the speed on the machine's red LED, the percussive smashing of his big legs on the moving rubber mat echoed embarrassingly through the room. Alan had tried - not hard - not to laugh.

The pleasures of cross country skiing can take your mind off the stresses of the daily grind, whether you seek the solitude of solo skiing or are spending some quality time with family and friends. It's also a great aerobic activity, enabling you to burn up hundreds of calories per hour without straining joints such as ankles and knees. You'll get a low-impact workout while enjoying the outdoors, and the scenery sure beats the view at your local health club. But as with any new sport, cross country skiing can seem daunting to newcomers. Novices can be baffled by the variety of equipment choices and even the unfamiliar words. This guide is designed to put you at ease and give you basic information that will help you get started the right way. Skip to: Gear Up
Before renting or purchasing equipment, ask yourself a few questions: Will you ski two times a year or more? Where do you plan to ski? The terrain and location helps determine your equipment choices. Cross country skiing allows you to choose from a variety of locations. Parks, golf courses, hiking trails or cross country ski areas are all good choices. Determining your projected commitment level will help you decide whether to rent, lease or buy equipment.

Skiing Opportunities in Idaho
Numerous state parks, US Forests, municipalities and private ski operators in Idaho provide cross-country skiing opportunities. This guide describes the cross-country ski areas offered by the Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation through the Park N' Ski program and Idaho's state parks. Idaho City Area Island Park Area Banner Ridge Bear Gulch/Mesa Falls Gold Fork Brimstone/Buffalo River ... Harriman State Park Areas Other Areas Farragut Elk River Round Lake Palouse Divide ... Park N' Ski Permit Info Park N' Ski permits have financed much of the cross-country skiing development in Idaho during the past several years. Purchasing a pass provides a funding source for ski clubs and agencies interested in maintaining and developing cross-country skiing facilities. When you purchase a $20 annual permit, or a 3-day temporary permit for $7.50, the money is dedicated by law to be used exclusively for improving cross-country skiing opportunities. As such, the program has been widely supported by Nordic skiers statewide. When skiers purchase a permit, they are asked to designate a specific Park N' Ski area they would like to see improved. This gives skiers greater control over how and where the funds are spent. Here's where to purchase your permit.

38. Traditional Skiing In Finland
An overview of cross country skiing in Finland including historical background and pictures.
http://virtual.finland.fi/finfo/english/skiing.html
Written for Virtual Finland by Joe Brady T he Finns used to say of themselves that they were born on skis, and the world outside believed them. They would not make the same claim so lightly now, as the ski has changed from being an everyday utility, a means of transport in rural areas, to its present status as an item of equipment for sports and leisure. That said, one should not forget the exception of the Finnish army, which still respects the ski as an effective aid to mobility and trains its soldiers to operate in snow. They did so to great effect in the Winter War of 1939-1940 against the Soviet Union and in the subsequent campaign against the same adversary between 1941 and 1944. © SA-kuva
Fire and movement. A couple of combatants lunge forward during a battle in Saija, Lapland on
21 February 1940. A few years ago, in his book Winter in Finland , professor W. R. Mead wrote: "Historically, skis are some of the oldest pieces of equipment found in the country." The ski has indeed been is use in Finland for thousands of years. Just as in Norway and Sweden, some of the oldest artefacts in Finland have been discovered in boglands. The peat bogs of Finland have yielded a variety of prehistoric skis in different parts of the country. Pollen dating of peat at one of the oldest sites, at Kinnula, in the southern province of Häme, gives an age of 4,000 years to the skis found there.
