CALDERDALE
CYCLING PROMOTION GROUP
(CCPG)
Cycling should be safe and enjoyable. It often isn't, because cycling facilities (on-road cycle lanes, off road cycle routes, etc) are non-existent, poorly designed, incoherent or badly maintained. CCPG is a network of people and organisations in Calderdale pressing for decent facilities for cyclists. There are many Calderdale folk, young and old, who'd like to cycle more often, but currently don't because of the dangers of some of Calderdale's roads. The CCPG network includes commuting, utility, recreational and sports cyclists, on-road and off-road, fit and unfit. Some belong to cycling clubs, such as CTC or Autumn Tints. Many don't. Between us we use a wide variety of cycles - road bikes, mountain bikes, hybrids, folders, shoppers, tandems, racers, recumbents and even unicycles. There are no membership fees or routine formal meetings. We keep in touch with each other by 'phone, email or over a drink in a pub, as and when anyone wants to discuss an issue. Calderdale Council formally consults us re. their on-road and off-road proposals that may affect cycling. To join this informal network, simply send your email address to

Legendary Spring Race To Return as NOVA DESERT CLASSIC
The Nova Youth Cycling Foundation announces the return to Arizona of a legendary spring mountain bike event once called the “Cactus Cup”. The NOVA DESERT CLASSIC will take place on March 21, 22, and 23, 2003.
Once again, mountain bikers from across the nation can trek to the desert and start their season off with a three-day, mountain bike stage race and cycling exposition. The cross-country race has received AMBC designation from USA Cycling and the stage race will be open to all riders. The Nova Desert Classic will provide an opportunity to ride with some of the best mountain bikers around in a beautiful setting. The event will follow a similar format as in the past but with some distinct differences. One is a Tour De France style Team Time Trial and a major Junior Expert stage competition. Cash awards range from $4,600 for pro riders, $2,100 for Junior Experts and $10,000 of product awards for other riders.
“So far the response has been incredible”, says Race Director, Jerry Sieve. “People have contacted me from all over the country saying how excited they are to have a race like this return. Its just a great time of year for mountain bikers to visit us and start their season.” Possibly the most unique aspect of the whole event is that all proceeds will go support the efforts of the NOVA YOUTH CYCLING FOUNDATION a not-for-profit organization that promotes youth cycling and racing. Do to the potential popularity of some classes, field limits will be in effect. Registration will open on January 1, 2003.
