Daito Ryu Aiki Jujutsu Dai = jap.

HisaTakuma and Daito-ryu
September 1999, written by Yutaka Amatsu, Hiden 8 dan
Hisa Takuma was born in 1895 and died 1980. His home-town is in Kochi-prefecture in Shikoku-island. Japan is consisted of many islands, main islands are, from north, Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu. Hisa graduated Kobe university (school-name was different at that time). When Hisa was a school-boy he was a captain of Sumo-club. Sumo is one of Japanese martial arts, two persons wrestle in a circle about 6 meters diameter, when pushed out of this circle or touch the ground any part of his body except bottom of his feet, he is defeated. Hisa won All Kansai student Sumo championship. Kansai is western part of Honshu. Teacher changed to Takeda Sokaku, Hisa and other Asahi-men practised Daito-ryu harder than before . In March of 1939, Hisa was given Menkyokaiden (you are equal to me, I have nothing to teach you anymore), and 6 Asahi-men were given Hiden 8 dan. In his life Takeda Sokaku gave Menkyokaiden only to Hisa, he did not give it even to his son. After given Menkyokaiden Hisa taught Daito-ryu to Asahi-men and policemen of Osaka. Hisa retired from Asahi in 1944. In 1945 Japan was defeated in the World War 2, and all Japanese martial arts were banned to practice. After 3 years Japanese were permitted to practice martial arts again. Hisa opened his own dojo in Osaka, also in Asahi company Daito-ryu club revived, Hisa taught both in his dojo and Asahi club. In Hisa's dojo excellent pupils are Mori ( Hiden 8 dan), Kobayashi ( Hiden 8 dan), Kawabe (Hiden 7 dan). In Asahi club Utsunomiya ( Hiden 8 dan) and I (Hiden 8 dan). But I think Daito-ryu is a little different in Hisa's dojo and Asahi club.

FUDOSHIN Fudoshin is a group that is part of Daito-ryu aiki-jutsu Takumakai organization. We practice in Fudoshin Daito-ryu aiki-jujutsu Takumakai and Ono-ha Itto-ryu kenjutsu. Fudoshin is the only group in Europe that is practicing Daito-ryu aiki-jujutsu Takumakai. Takumakai is one of the four major Daito-ryu branches in Japan. We concentrate mainly to train aiki-jujutsu. Kenjutsu training gives support to learning aiki-jujutsu. Training in Takumakai starts from ju-jutsu techniques. But as one advances, techniques turn more and more into aiki techniques. The aiki technique means that we use the opponent's force and reflexes in the technique. To be able to do this, it requires that one must be very relaxed and have the good co-ordination of the own body. These are not easy things to learn, and one can never master them perfectly. Thus, this means that you can always train more and become better, even if one would have trained several decades. Fudoshin group has very good connections to Japan. We have had possibility to get regularly teaching from Japan. Twice a year Daito-ryu teachers Takeshi Kawabe and Shinichiro Umei have been visiting in Finland. Many members of Fudoshin have been training in Japan several times. Takumakai's four main teachers were visiting in Finland on August 1999. Most of them were teaching first time Daito-ryu outside Japan.

Updated February 24 th Daito-ryu Aikijujutsu Daito-ryu Aikijujutsu is one of the oldest recorded forms of Japanese Aikijujutsu. The origin of the art is somewhat under a dispute since a Korean legend claims that Daito-ryu Aikijujutsu was developed by Prince Sadazumi (884-916) (known as Prince Teijun in Korea), the sixth son of Japanese Emperor Seiwa, after receiving instruction in Yoo Sool from traveling Korean Buddhist monks. The documentation of Aikijujutsu, however, attributes the style's development to Minamoto no Yoshimitsu (1045-1127), the third son of Minamoto no Yoriyoshi (988-1075), who was the fifth-generation descendant of Emperor Seiwa. Nonetheless, Minamoto no Yoshimitsu is regarded as the founder on Daito-ryu Aikijujutsu. The Minamoto family was one of the major ruling clans of Japan during the Heian Period (794-1158) and onward in Japanese history. In fact, Minamoto no Yorimoto (1147-1199) established the Kamakura Shogunate, a period when the samurai military governed the country.

An Overview History of Daito Ryu Aikijutsu By Scott Shaw Daito Ryu was the primary influence for the formation of Hapkido. Therefore, the history of Daito Ryu is an essential element to understanding the birth of Hapkido. The systems of martial arts which were developed in Japan have been driven to the forefront of modern understanding primarily at the hands of the media. Certainly, the acts of the Kamikaze pilots of World War II will live throughout history in infamy. But, it is no doubt the stylings of the Japanese Samurai Swordsmen as have been depicted in an untold number of televisions programs and movies, that has etched the image of the Japanese martial arts onto the minds of the masses. Though little is written about the initial formation of martial culture in Japan, this nation historically traces the foundations of its martial arts to early contact with Korea and China. From these ancient contacts, and the influences provided by these two cultures, Japan set about on a course of taking what it had learned, redefining this knowledge, and then developing its own systems of self defense which more exactly emulate Japanese society. This was a long process, beginning in appropriately the fifth century B.C.E., and continuing forward until Samurai culture firmly took hold during the eleventh and twentieth centuries of the common era. Before the study of Daito Ryu can begin, it must be noted that there have been over five thousand Ryu or "Schools of Martial Arts" uniquely identified as having existed in Japan. The techniques of these various schools were made up of hand-to-hand combat and many used various weapons, most particularly the sword, as an additional means of self defense. As such, though many of the schools had and have similar techniques, just has many possess techniques which were vastly different from other schools of their era. Thus, it can be understood that there has never one singular method of martial arts in Japan. Due to this fact, one should never judge the techniques of a practitioner of one system as being any less valid that that of another.

Daito Ryu Aiki-Jujutsu
Intro:
A prominent sub-style of Jujutsu.
Origin:
Japan
History:
Daito-ryu Aiki-Jujutsu is an old Jujutsu style presumably founded my Minamoto, Yoshimitsu in the eleventh century. Originally, it was only practised by the highest ranking Samurais in the Takeda family in the Kai fiefdom in northern Japan.
Feudal overlord Takeda, Shingen died in 1573, and his kinsman Takeda, Kunitsugu moved to the Aizu fiefdom, where he became Jito - overseer of the fief. Kunitsugu introduced Daitoryu Aikijujutsu at the Aizu fiefdom, where the secret fighting art only was taught to the feudal lords and the highest ranking samurais and ladies in waiting.
The feudal system was broken down after 1868 when the Meiji restoration begun. Saigo, Tanomo (1829-1905), the heir to Daito-ryu gave the system to Takeda, Sogaku (1859-1943) and instructed him to pass it on to future generations. Takeda, Sogaku first used the term "Daito-ryu Aikijujutsu" in the beginning of the twentieth century and taught the art of it to many students.
Takeda, Sogaku taught Daito-ryu from the beginning of the twentieth century until his death in 1943 two of his best known students were Ueshiba, Morihei, founder of Aikido and Choi, Yong Sul, founder of Hapkido.
