Sussex University's Most Improved Club of the Year 2001-2002 Dinghy Sailing Dinghy Sailing Index About Dinghy Sailing with the Club The club has affiliations to both Weir Wood Sailing Club and Hove Lagoon Watersports Centre allowing the club to provide members of all abilities with a huge variety of dinghy sailing opportunities throughout the year. For more experienced sailors the club has its own fleet of dinghies based at Weir Wood Reservoir, 30 minutes north of Brighton. These include 4 Laser 2s, 2 Larks and 2 Toppers. Having the boats based at Weir Wood means that they can be involved in casual sailing and racing all year round with the weather very rarely getting in the way. Our affiliation to Hove Lagoon allows us to provide a range of opportunities to gain Royal Yachting Association Dinghy Sailing Qualifications and for members new to sailing to give it a try in a safe environment. In the Summer term it is possible for experienced members to sail a variety of dinghies from Laser Picos to Dart 16 Catamarans in the sea off Brighton. Throughout the year we are often approached with many other opportunities to sail with people from other local clubs including Shoreham Sailing club and Sussex Yacht Club.

Dinghy Sailing and Keel boat Qualifications
See also: General notes on Sailing , Offshore Sailing Qualifications and Training Schemes. This page is intended to give Scouts and Leaders an idea of what qualifications are available, and what each one involves. For example, do you know what a Scout means if he tells you that he had an Advanced Sailing Red Award? Or do you know the appropriate course for a novice leader wanting to learn to sail? The training schemes and qualifications outlined below are administered by the Royal Yachting Association (RYA), the National governing body for Sailing. Contact them for the full syllabuses and details of assessment centres for these awards. Formal RYA qualifications are not required to get Scout Association Activities Authorisation. However applicants need to have technical skills and knowledge to the standard of the RYA award. The table below gives an indication of the correlation between RYA awards an Scout Authorisation. Holding the RYA award does not automatically entitle you to Scout Authorisation; it should cover the technical skills part, but the county assessor may still want to assess your ability working with youngsters. To apply for authorisation contact your DC or ACC(Activities) through your GSL; see Factsheet FS120601. There is an important distinction between awards for personal skills and those for instructors. Personal skills indicate an individual's technical skills and competence whereas instructor awards measure ability to teach others. RYA Instructors can assess for personal skill level certificates through an approved centre (NB BCU canoe instructors can assess without going through a centre). There is nothing to stop someone without an instructor award sharing their skills and experience with others; it's common within Scouting, but they will not be able to assess for the National Governing Body qualifications.

The route to becoming an Instructor
The Dinghy Instructors’ task is made much simpler by the structure offered by the Royal Yachting Association’s, (RYA), recommended schemes. The RYA administer but do not run the courses which cover all aspects from complete beginner. These pages are aimed at instructors and those who are considering becoming one.
The route to becoming an instructor follows a small number of stages. The RYA Sailing schemes, (for dinghies) are split into two groups. Those for under 16’s (The Young Sailors Scheme) and for the over 16’s (The National Sailing Scheme). Dinghy training for beginners follows a process known as “The Method”. The route to becoming a dinghy instructor is not a difficult one. There are a number of stages in the process as shown here. Click on each item to find out more about them. Note: this is the most common and preferred route although other sequences are possible.
