I am not a Member - Join here! VSDRA was first formed in 1994 , as it was foreseen that for our sport to ever be recognized we needed to have a separate body away from the pure breed clubs. The great force behind the original development of VSDRA was Nola Randell. After finding out what requirements where necessary for our future development we needed a non-discriminatory body (pure breeds being discriminatory as only for pure breeds) to help develop policies and enable future possible funding and recognition by government bodies for the sport of Sled Dog Racing.
The association was called Victorian Sled Dog Racing Association as its intention at the time was that it wanted to concentrate on our own State (Victoria), and when enough interstate clubs were formed they could possibly form their own state body, and then move forward and form an Australian Association.
VSDRA is made up of Sled Dog Racing clubs, which form the counsel along with a general committee for day to day running of the association. VSDRA is also made up of general members, who are represented by 2 driver delegates, but members can contact the general committee if they have any questions or problems.

Mad Dog Racing " was originally started by Gary Madden. He acquired this nickname due to his racing style in the L.I.T.R.A. Hit-to-Pass (Demos) division, this being contrary to his original style in stock car racing which was smooth and fast. Other drivers to have run under this logo are current driver Sharon Constantine , and Gary's son, Danny Madden who was the 1994 L.I.T.R.A. Claimer Champion. By Michael Krenn of the Milwaukee Journal Staff
Cedarburg - While many people are looking forward to betting on races in this state, some older folks are looking bad to bygone days when dogs and horses raced at tracks here.
Aurelia Fish, 74, tells how she and several companions would hedge the bets they placed on the horses and dogs that once ran at the Ozaukee County Fairgrounds.
"We would get to be friends with some of the jockeys and dog trainers and sometimes they would give us hints about the races...like 'keep your eye on this horse or on that dog because it may just about be ready to make a surprise showing."
"We didn't think of it as cheating, just neighborly hospitality," said Fish, of Milwaukee.
Fish was in her teens and early 20s and a Cedarburg resident, when the horses and dogs raced at tracks here.
The recent passage of a pari-mutuel betting bill by the State Legislature has prompted Fish and a few other former and current Cedarburg residents to seek information on the community's colorful, if intermittent, flirtation with gambling on the races.

is recognized as the "Winningest Musher in the World." His victories include not only the 1,049 mile Iditarod Sled Dog Race in 1993, 1996, and 1998, but also over two dozen first place finishes in races all across Alaska. During the past 20 years, Jeff has logged more than 100,000 miles on a dog sled.
Jeff moved to Alaska in 1975 in search of adventure. He quickly became interested in dog sledding and Alaska huskies, devoting all his spare time and money to building his own team, while developing a construction business. He began racing in 1980. His competitive nature had found a new outlet, and Jeff set his sights ever higher, entering his first Iditarod just one year later. In 1992 he decided to devote his full time and energy to training and racing, setting aside his construction business. He won his first Iditarod the following season. While on a training run in Denali National Park in 1980, Jeff's team became entangled with that of a new volunteer ranger, and thus he met his future wife. Donna Gates came to Denali after finishing her master's degree in Medical Illustration. She and Jeff married in 1983 and began developing their homestead on Goose Lake just south of the park entrance. The King family also includes three daughters

    1. History
    2. Types of Sled Dogs
Naturally, most northern breeds were used as sled dogs. Alaskan Malamutes, Siberian Huskies, Eskimo Dogs, Greenlands, Samoyeds, Norrbottenspets, and Hokkaidokens are all sled dogs. However, lots of different breeds of dogs have been and are used to drive sleds and carts. People use Irish Setters, Dalmations, Golden Retrievers, etc., to enjoy mushing sports. In fact, most modern day speed and endurance mushers use mixed breeds (often Siberian crossed with Greyhound). So, if you do not have a "sled dog," but still want to enjoy the sport, fear not, for most any type of dog can be used. Mushing is fun, both to take part in and simply to watch.
