61. Race Bikes
Thumbnail for race GSXRProbably the most popular engines for drag bikes arefourcylinder Suzukis, both early GSX's and the later oil-cooled GSXR's.
http://www.andyrem.freeserve.co.uk/subpages/bike02.htm
To view a picture full-size, click on it, then use the browser's BACK button or menu to navigate back to the current page. Bottom of Page Anders 'Charlie' Karling's drag racer runs in the Top Fuel class of the European race series for 'Super Twins'. The turbocharged engine is based on a four-cam Harley-Davidson Sportster engine, although we suspect that there are not a great many original Motor Company parts in there.
Thanks go to Monique Pels for the original pictures used for this view of her father Ton Pels, and his Zodiac -sponsored Super Twin Top Fueler. The bike was Europe's first 200mph Harley - further details can be found via the above-mentioned Zodiac's site, or through Monique's own Top Fuel Drag Racing website.
Probably the most popular engines for drag bikes are four-cylinder Suzukis, both early GSX's and the later oil-cooled GSXR's. This bike has a nickel-plated steel tube frame by Steelheart Engineering to support its GSXR version. Although it has a separate swingarm, this is fixed with a solid link: suspension is not used on fast drag bikes so that the power is directed straight through the tyre to the track. Sprung rear suspension would allow a bike to 'squat' when the clutch is released, wasting valuable fractions of seconds. Although this 'super street' style bike does not have wheelie bars, they would also be difficult to install with a moving swingarm.
You would not normally find a bike here with pink paint: pink really belongs on Lady Penelope's Rolls-Royce, not on a bike, but it actually works well on this Suzuki.

Use the pink slide out menu on the top left side of the page to navigate, as it has the most links! My business (before a bad accident left me paralysed from the chest down) was designing automotive computerized dynamometers mainly for bikes. And I had a mobile unit built into a big trailer that was used by lots of bike magazines and race teams, so I got to get paid for having fun! I also used to build Nitrous Oxide injection systems for bikes and cars for both road and drag racing use. Miniature home built gas turbines and pulsejets, are a part of my model aircraft interests and for their own sake for fun! Also on this site are my personal details, my old Nitrous/Suzuki 1100 road and drag race Bike, and my VR6 powered corporate people carrier, converted for disabled (Wheelchair) use.

66. Riding Drag Is Anything But
The lead and drag bikes are a team designated by the group to conductthem safely to their destination. These are not symbolic positions.
http://www.msgroup.org/TIP015.html
By James R. Davis While a tour group is highly dependant upon the skills and judgment of the lead bike's rider, in many ways they are more dependant on the drag bike for successfully arriving at their destination. Let's first discuss the drag bike's obvious role during group lane changing maneuvers. Almost always, a lane change is initiated by the lead bike, but there are times when the drag bike should do so. For example, if the group is traveling on a freeway and the drag bike observes that an 18-wheeler is harassing the group (tailgating or honking its horn), the proper response of the drag bike is to increase the distance between himself and the next bike in front of him and to radio ahead to the lead bike recommending an immediate lane change to the right, and why. If the lead bike requests a lane change, the drag bike must first determine that it is safe to do so. If it is not, he must tell the lead why he is unwilling or cannot do so at this time. That is, the drag bike determines if and when a lane change that is requested by the lead bike is to happen. (Note that if the group moves into a slower moving lane from front to back, much like a normal car passing maneuver, the lead bike does not request a lane change at all - he announces it - and the drag bike's responsibility is to announce when the maneuver is completed.) [Important! The proper response from the drag bike to a request to obtain a new lane for the group should ALWAYS be: "Stand By". To say something like "OK" can be confused by some to mean the lane has been obtained and it is time to move over. It is NOT safe to change lanes until the drag bike subsequently says "The lane has been secured - following the red car", or something to that effect. If the drag bike denies the request for a lane change he has already told the lead bike (and all listeners) to 'stand by' and so merely then updates that advisory with why the request is denied.]

First Row 2nd Row 3rd Row The veterans are knowledgeable enough to be able to pass information up and down the Line through hand signals, while keeping watch on the Line and new members behind and ahead of them to detect problems and help resolve them before they become accidents . There may be several rows taken up by these members. Next Row There may be several rows taken up by these riders. Last Row Signals Line riding requires good communications skills, an understanding of hand signals, and basic safe riding practices. There's nothing like rumbling down the road in a Line of motorcycles. Once you've ridden with a Line, it's hard to ride alone again!
Hand Signals There are a few basic hand signals used when riding in a Line. The most common ones are Right and Left Turn and Slow Down. In addition, Road Hazard, Car Passing, Single File riding, & Staggered riding are also fairly common. Lastly, "Close the Door", "Change Lanes from the Rear", and "Block the Lane" are very helpful to the Road Captain (in the front of the Line) and the Drag Bike (in the rear of the Line).
LINE SIGNALS Once learned, everyone in the Line performs these signals as a means of passing information up and down the Line.

73. 4 Radical Honda Concept Bikes
T3, with its traditional flame paint job, and T4, wearing a 9in.-wideGoodyear Eagle drag slick, take inspiration from pro drag bikes.
http://www.popularmechanics.com/automotive/motor_cycles/2001/3/4_Radical_Bikes/p
CHEF OF THE FUTURE Honda cooks up four radical concept bikes. BY FRANCIS SOYER The Type 1 concept lead to Honda’s 2002 VTX1800C. At the recent International Motorcycle Show in Long Beach, Calif., Honda rolled out four concept bikes that it says will influence the design of its future cruisers. Called simply Type 1 through Type 4, each of these bikes is radically different from the other three. T1, which was first introduced to the public in 1998, evokes a hot-rod or musclecar image. T2 features deep fenders and a low-slung tank, which hark back to the lowered and chopped roadsters of the 1940s and ’50s. T3, with its traditional flame paint job, and T4, wearing a 9-in.-wide Goodyear Eagle drag slick, take inspiration from pro drag bikes. All four motorcycles are based on the horizontally opposed six-cylinder Honda F6 engine, which powers the current Gold Wing and Valkyrie models. This is a significant departure from the gaggle of V-twin-powered cruiser concepts from other bike makers that have shown themselves lately. “Not every new idea will make it to the factory production line,” says a Honda source. “That’s not the purpose of these concept bikes. Instead, they are designed to be extreme exercises. Over time, some of these ideas will come to fruition.” Some already have. Many features that debuted on T1 can now be seen in the design of Honda’s 2002 VTX1800C production cruiser. Elements such as the VTX’s grabrail that’s faired into the rear fender and the smoothly integrated tank/seat junction began life on T1. Will bits and pieces of the other bikes hit the street over the next few years? Stay tuned, says Honda.
