all dragon boaters and new-comers to practice sessions. This spectacular and exciting team sport originated in China over 2300 years ago , and came to South Africa in 1992 when two beautiful ceremonial wooden dragon boats were presented to Cape Town by our Taiwanese sister city. As well as the majestic wooden flag-catching boats, Cape Town and Johannesburg have fibreglass racing dragon boats taken from the Hong Kong mould.

On the way up the Pearl River, with its team of geologists, cartographers, botanists, and missionaries, the mission anchored at a small island for their fresh water supply. Their geologist Clarke Abel wrote: "...a supply of the purest water is seen falling from the cliffs of two summits in a series of cascades, the last of which glides in one grand, graceful lapse into a rocky basin on the beach." Because of its beauty and its strategic importance, Hong Kong's first pictorial images - "The Waterfall at Hong Kong" was made by the Mission's artist William Havell. Today, the original print of this historical record of Hong Kong can still be seen in the Historical Picture Gallery of the Hong Kong Museum of Art.

Since the introduction of Dragon Boating to the city of Stratford in September 1997, the sport has grown to become an integral part of the summer atmosphere in the city. Visitors to our city from around the world, who have arrived to enjoy our famous Stratford Festival Theatre , are often entranced by the vision of a dragon boat gliding along the river. With the enthusiasm of the local paddlers, the city has become a hot spot for the sport within the province of Ontrio. The local river has become "home" to several crews that race at festivals across the province of Ontario. City crews and paddlers have also participated at festivals in Montreal, Vancouver, Philadelphia and Germany, all for the enjoyment of their sport. The Ready! Ready! event is another great example of the love for Dragon Boating within the city and all those who participate in the sport. The Ready! Ready! crew is made up of paddlers who have all participated with community teams from our local festival at one time or another. About Dragon Boating
Dragon Boat racing began in China more than 2,000 years ago. Legend has it that Qu Yuan, a Chinese poet and scholar in the fourth century BC, took such umbrage to the corruption within the Chu Dynasty he flung himself into the Mi Lo River. Qu Yuan was very beloved by the people, and local fisherman paddled furiously from shore to try to save him. To prevent his body from being eaten by the fish and to appease the river dragons, the fishermen scattered rice dumplings into the water. They couldn't save Qu Yuan, but this attempt to save Qu Yuan is re-acted in the form of dragon boat racing every year. Now more than 2,000 years later the sport of dragon boat racing has really taken off. Dragon boat racing is one of the fastest growing water sports in the world. The sport has always been popular in the Pacific Rim, but the growth of the sport in the Western world over the last five years has been nothing short of phenomenal. Find a city with a stretch of water and chances are you will find a dragon boat race: Hong Kong, Sydney, New York, London, Cap Town, Dhaka, Wellington, Vancouver, Kelowna, or Edmonton. A quarter of a million people turn out annually for the Toronto race and Sweden alone has over 400 crews. The dragon boats have a unique concave design originating from Chinese fishing vessels thousands of years ago. These multi-colored boats are decorated with fierce dragon heads, scaly bodies and elaborate tails. Measuring nearly 18 meters long, they are almost the length of a large metro bus.
