The program’s focus is hunter seat equitation and basic dressage and involves about 100 students each semester.
Almost all riders compete in some manner while at Smith, and many try out in the fall for the intercollegiate team. About 25 to 30 riders are chosen to fill the eight divisions, ranging from beginner walk-trot to open (Medal/Maclay). Intercollegiate showing is unique because riders are mounted on horses drawn by lot and provided by the host college. Students compete in about eight Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) shows each year, where they may qualify for the regional, zone and national finals.

Dressage Good Seat of Discipline
by Deborah Kaetz
dkaetz@ns.sympatico.ca
Like other sports, the art of dressage riding involves a great amount of training for body and mind. This includes hours, month and years of ovals, circles and figure eights, with and without stirrups, working with injuries (of the rider and the horse), highs and lows, ups and downs. But, because I am also working with the mind and body of another sentient being, this kind of riding practice becomes much more than the sum of its parts. The quotations I have chosen are from The Magyal Pomra Encampment Transcripts: 1979-1982 A lot of you who are here have never smelled a horse, never actually experienced a horse. It if very important for you to relate with even the metaphorical exertion which is the horse. You have to smell the horses, feel them, and examine their chewing, their tails, their ears, the way they smell, their breath.... Actually horseness is very much related to the warrior principle altogether, which is very important. (1979, Talk 3)

In Loving Memory of "Mac" Just going thru the motions, surviving day by day, Nothing holds much meaning now he's gone away. Confusion, anger, sorrow, are just some of the things you feel, the hands of time are ticking, they tell you time will heal. You wonder why this had to be, why fate was so unkind. Was there anything you could have done, nothing springs to mind. Was it really only yesterday you had to let him go. You can't look in his stall, it seems so empty now. You long to see his handsome face, but you can't anymore. You gave him all the love that you had there to give, he knew that he could never have a better place to live. That doesn't mend your breaking heart, or stem the tears that flow, only time will heal these wounds, I've been there and I know. By: Shirley Cruickshank As big as he was, Mac's personality and playfulness endeared him to many and he will be greatly missed. Welcome to Hoof Prints

Their performances were not earth shattering, more was expected of Stefan van Ingelgem and Saros vh Gestelhof (scoring 70% at national shows, just reaching 66% at CDI's), Ann D'Ieteren and Iguazu could have done better as well. Indeed it is extremely hard, if not impossible to learn to ride from a book if you're not aware of what your faults are in the first place. It's this acknowledgement of a problem that leads to better riding and performance. Are you stuck at Preliminary / Novice (training level) dressage? I bet it's not because your horse isn't capable of it. Is it the thought of all that trot work - sitting! Your horse can't counter-canter (why not!).
Some of you may have trainers / instructors who spend a lot of time and frustration on your horse's problems, but how many of you have someone who tells you that the problem lies with you and can get you to make that, sometimes seemingly minor change that brings about an often amazing turnaround in your riding ? Nothing presented in these pages is new or revolutionary (although it may appear to be if you've never
Masters. I am not implying anything by not including them; their names will appear within these pages).

Web Design DressageRider.com was created to bring together the information dressage riders need in order to progress either personally or competively. The site unites stables, trainers, breeders and riders along with products and services used by the dressage community. Although the site directories are currently limited to North America, it will eventually house information for dressage riders world wide. Quick Links Discussion Forums Don't forget to visit our discussion forums ! Ask a question or leave an answer! Although dressage is a discipline in and of itself, it is derived from a French word which means "to train." Dressage is considered by some to be the ballet of horse-back riding. At it's most complex levels, the rider and horse will execute a series of difficult movements without any visiable aids from the rider or resistance from the horse. At it's most basic, the rider and horse will work to execute perfect circles, serpentines and other basic patterns at given spots within the dressage arena. The overall idea is that the horse and rider are in harmonydance partners, if you will. The end goal is a horse that is responsive and forward with a round and oscilating topline created so by a rider that is light on the aids.
