INTRODUCTION
Welcome to my new home - Falconry.ca. All of the pages have a [Top] icon at the bottom right corner to allow you to navigate the pages more easily. My name is Roy Priest. I live in Ladner, British Columbia, Canada. My introduction to falconry was through a Sportsman's Show in 1963. George Galicz, a well known local falconer, was exhibiting his birds. I was attracted to the beautiful male Kestrel he had on display. George let me hold it and I was hooked. He told me I had to join the B.C. Falconry Club and get permission from my parents. They were used to me bringing all manner of animals home and readily agreed. My first bird was a Red-tailed Hawk. Since that time I have flown most of the birds used in falconry in B.C., England and Saskatchewan. While in Saskatchewan I assisted in the release of 3 Peregrines in Downtown Regina . There had been successful releases in Saskatoon and this was to be Regina's first. I acted as a hack attendent, feeding and tracking the birds for about 2 months.

Hunting falcon with hood and bell.
by Shawn E. Carroll A swift bird, gliding high above the grassy plain, is the focal point of a group of hunters scattered below. The falcon, its identity betrayed by its size, speed, and shape appears as merely a speck cutting across the sky like a shooting star. It suddently tucks its wings and begins to dive, its stream-lined silhouette growing slightly larger, until a flock of mallards on the small lake take notice and begin frantically to disperse. But for one duck, slightly too young and inexperienced, it is too late. The peregrine has already chosen its feathered target, and the duck is killed instantly as the peregrine slams its razor-sharp talons into its flesh. The two birds fall to the ground together as the men emit a muffled cheer and begin trekking toward the landing site to recover the prey and the falcon. This mystical scene has been repeated for thousands of years, from the sands of Arabia to the mountains of East Asia or the prairies of the American Great Plains. Little has changed fundamentally in the sport or, as some would argue the

What is Falconry ?
Do You Really Want to Become a Falconer?
Thank you for your inquiry about falconry. You may have recently read about this ancient art in a book or periodical, learned about it through television or radio, perhaps a movie, or may have even seen a trained hawk in action. Whatever the case, you were obviously impressed enough to want to learn more about the sport of falconry, and we appreciate your interest.
However, few people thrilling at the magic of a trained hawk in flight realize what demands are placed upon one who aspires to be a falconer. Even fewer would be willing to make the sacrifices. There are the stringent, long-term demands of time, effort, and money.
The media often sensationalizes falconry, because the sport can be exciting to watch and carries with it the intrigue of antiquity, but
public media frequently is inaccurate in its representation of what it takes to be a falconer.
Of all sports in America, falconry is the only one that utilizes a
trained wild creature. Falcons, hawks, eagles and owls are essential elements of our wildlife. The competent falconer takes care to follow sound conservation principles in the pursuit of the sport. Even though the federal government's environmental assessment states falconry has "no impact" on wild raptor populations, a careless, uninformed individual, attempting to satisfy a passing fancy, can do great harm to one or more birds and cast the shadow of discredit on the sport of falconry itself. Most falconers, therefore, before they will agree to help anyone newly attracted to the sport, will require evidence of a serious, committed interest in falconry. They feel that anything less is not worth bothering with.
