The True (Brief) History of Footbag By John Stalberger "Mr. Hacky Sack" In the summer of 1972 I met Mike Marshall in Oregon City, Oregon, while visiting a high school buddy that was living in the Portland, Oregon area. We instantly became friends, spending much of our time together. That first day we met, Mike pulled out a bean bag and started juggling it with his feet, arms, hands and head - a game he had learned from a local Native America. From the moment he tossed it to me "I was hooked!" We started playing every day far hours and together we began to form a vision of "Hacking the Sack" as more than simply a fun pastime game but also as a sport and a lifestyle passion for people everywhere. With a background in sports, physical education and physical therapy and with a personal injury to my right knee that I was rehabilitating, "Hacking the Sack" became my life.

I live outside of Milwaukee, WI and so we don't really have mountains but the riding in the Southern Kettle Moraine forest, on the Emma Carlin and especially the John Muir trails, is some of the best in the midwest. I ride a hardtail Cannondale CADD 3 with a Fatty SL fork and like it a lot. It's my second Cannondale and certainly not my last - my next is a going to be a road bike.

Footbag has existed as a competitive sport in several forms since the 1970's. Not Just Footbag - Multi Talented
Away from its true purpose in life, the footbag can be marketed in many ways. For example, the harder leather footbag, called the Lightning, makes a great miniature replica football.

http://flyingaces.com/footbag.html
Footbag
The Footbag , known to many as the Hacky-Sack , is evolving into a very popular activity around the world. It is a small round object which is kicked in a number of activites and games. Most footbags are either hand sewn or crocheted. In general, the more panels a bag has, the rounder it is. The first Hacky-Sacks had only 2 panels, much like the pattern on a baseball, and by the today's standards are very difficult to kick. Many potential kickers became discouraged by how difficult these bags were to kick. Today's equipment is so much better that it is much easier to learn.
The most popular Footbag activities are consecutive kicks, timed consecutive kicks, pairs consecutive kicks, footbag net (a volleyball type game played with a bag back and forth over a net), footbag golf, and freestyle. There is a World Footbag Association and tournaments all over the country. The World Championship is held every July at various sites in North America. Flying Aces full time member Greg Nelson and Flying Aces long time part time member Jay Moldenhauer have won the Pairs Freestyle Event three times. Greg and Tuan UU have won twice. You have to see these guys to believe their skill.

Basic Moves
Inside Kick Outside Kick Toe Kick Knee If you are just starting out, you will probably get frustrated, especially with a Bag that hasn't been worked in. Keep working, and it will all come around.
Courtesy Rules - For Casual Circle Play
No Hands (except when serving), No Arms - Shoulders are technically allowed and are widely accepted among the average hack circle. Always serve the bag to someone else , unless of course you are alone. Footbag is traditionally a game of courtesy, hence " The Courtesy Toss ": a light lob usually toward the receivers knee. Don't bogart that bag. - Don't always hog it 'till you drop it because that sucks for everybody else. Being able to pass well is important to almost all footbag games. Don't say "sorry". Everyone makes mistakes, especially when learning, so sorries are unneccissary. Try not to give knee passes Passes from the knee tend to go strait to the ground.
