The Kingdom's Rise To The Throne
By Donal Moriarty The first year of the new footballing Millennium will be remembered as the year that football bit back at its sister game, following a number of years in the shadow of the hurling championship. The first major trophy of the year went once again to the great Crossmaglen side, who defeated Na Fianna of Dublin in the All-Ireland Club Final in Croke Park on Patrick's Day.
Oisin McConville , star of the Club Final
Oisín McConville was the star of the show in the final, scoring 1-6 of his sides total, as Crossmaglen won their third title in four years, and their second in succession on the scoreline of 1-14 to 0-12. Derry and Meath contested the National league final. Derry had got to the final with a win over an emerging Roscommon, while Meath had secured their place in the decider after a titanic battle with Kerry in the other semi-final. Derry came through in the end, but only after a replay, on the score of 1-08 to 0-09. The championship kicked off in early May with the Leinster round robin, Wicklow and Wexford winning on the opening day. The Leinster Championship proved to be extremely competitive this season, Wexford coming through the round robin to face Dublin in the quarter-finals, where they found Vinny Murphy and Co a step up in class.

HOME NIEUWS SPORT NIEUWE MEDIA ...

    About Gaelic Football
To learn more about Gaelic football and Hurling visit the official G.A.A. site. History of Gaelic Football Gaelic Football can be described as a mixture of soccer and rugby, although it predates both of those games. It is a field game which has developed as a distinct game similar to the progression of Australian Rules. Indeed it is thought that Australian Rules evolved from Gaelic Football through the many thousands who were either deported or emigrated to Australia from the middle of the twentieth century. The Modern Game In August 1884 Micheal Cusack and Maurice Davin met a group of nationalists in Loughrea, County Galway, and outlined their plans to establish a national organization, the Gaelic Athletic Association, for Irish athletes and to revive hurling. Dr. T. W. Croke, (Archbishop of Cashel) became the first patron of the Association, and Croke Park in Dublin (the Association Headquarters) is named in his honor. The Gaelic Athletic Association is more than a sporting organization. Although it is dedicated to promoting the games of hurling, football, handball, rounders, and camogie, the Association also supports activities which enrich the culture of the nation and further Gaelic ideals, including the Irish language and Irish music and dance. The GAA endeavors to strengthen pride in the communities it serves. The GAA is the largest sporting organization in Ireland, boasting 2,800 clubs comprising of approximately 182,000 footballers and 97,000 hurlers. Membership of the GAA exceeds 800,000 at home and abroad ensuring its role as a powerful national movement with an important social and cultural influence in Irish life.

St. Joseph's High School, Plumbridge won the 'I'yrone vocational Schools Year 10 League, following a thrilling encounter with St. John's Dromore recently. In an exceptionally entertaining game played at Gortin, the Plumbridge school recorded their first Gaelic football title in some time thanks chiefly to a late goal from substitute Eugene McCullagh . The game was nip and tuck all the way with both sides producing flashes of brilliant football and the contest proved to be an excellent advertisement for schools' football in Tyrone. St. Joseph's, who trailed at half time by one point, feared that the title was going to slip away from them in the second half as St. John's began to take contral. However in a dramatic finale, the cards were turned when
