The Power of Goalball
By Sue Wiygul Martin The onset of a disability in adulthood often brings with it the loss of more than just the affected ability. With the onset of my blindness in 1982, I immediately put several activities on my list of activities in which I could no longer participate. One such group of activities were those related to recreation, and especially competitive sports. Before the onset of my blindness I enjoyed riding, canoeing, and swimming, both competitively and recreationally. But how could I do these sports now? I dismissed them from my mind. I felt the void though. Not only was I not getting the exercise to which I was accustomed, but also I was missing the socialization that accompanied participation in these various recreational activities. I sorely missed the camaraderie at the stable and the horseplay at the takeout at the end of a canoeing trip. "Well, it's just too bad," I thought. "I can't do that anymore." At the insistence of friends, family, and my own inner prompting, I tried swimming again. I learned that once I got in the pool, I was fine. I could swim to my heart's content, contacting the lane rope every few strokes to make sure I kept straight. This restored a much-needed physical activity. I felt my body begin to shape up as I swam regularly.

goalball
Goalball is a unique team sport for the visually impaired, played by 2 teams of 3 players.
All Players are blind-folded to enable blind, visually impaired and sighted athletes to compete together. (Although to play in a national team the athletes must be legally blind.) The game is of 14 minutes duration (playing time) divided into 2 x 7 minute halves. The ball used (which is called a goalball), weighs 1.25 kg and contains noise bells. The object of the game is to roll the ball over your opponent's goal line using a bowling action. Goalball was invented in 1946 by an Austrian Hanz Lorenzen and a German, Sett Reindle. It was used for sport and rehabilitation for the post WW II blind veterans. The game was introduced to the world in 1976 at the Paralympics in Toronto, Canada, the first world championships held in Austria in 1978. Since that time the popularity of Goalball has increased, it is now played in all IBSA (International Blind Sport Federation) regions. Before you start, you should prepare the court and organize the teams, each consisting of 3 members, 1 center and 2 wingers. You will also need to find a referee that is familiar with the rules and who will be able to start and control the course of the game.
To play Goalball you will need (1) Goalball, 76cm in diameter, and 1.250g in weight, (2) rolls duck tape, and (6) pair of blacked out swim or ski goggles, which are to be used as eyeshades. You may also want to acquire some knee and elbow pads to protect against bruises and floor burns.

"I've got it now! Comin' through....!" What is Goalball? Goalball was invented in Austria shortly after World War II to provide recreation for blinded veterans. It is played on a floor approximately the size of a volleyball court. The lines are taped and have a cord under the tape so the players can feel the line. The object of the game is to roll a ball the size of a basketball through the opposing team and across the goal line. The ball has a bell inside and all players must wear a blindfold. There are three players on each team.

Introduction to goalball. This 536142). Characteristics of goalball. Asits name suggests goalball is a ball game; it is also a team game.

Introduction to Goalball
This introduction was supplied by David Lee of British Blind Sport whose Head Office is at 67 Albert Street, Rugby CV21 2SN, United Kingdom (telephone +44 1788 536142)
Characteristics of goalball
As its name suggests Goalball is a ball game; it is also a team game. It has three characteristics which distinguish it from all team ball games played by sighted people. Firstly it is played with a ball which behaves like a rattle when in motion, so that its position can be located by listening. Secondly it is played on a court with tactile markings. This enables a player to determine his position on court and the direction in which he is facing, by feeling for the markings with his feet or his hands. Thirdly all players wear eyeshades to block out any residual sight so that the disadvantages of poor sight and no sight are equalised during play.
Setting a court for play
The amount of time necessary to prepare to play goalball should not be underestimated. An 18m x 9m court has to be set in accordance with the pattern shown below. In tournament play all the lines are tactile, but for informal play only the orientation lines and the lines defining the team areas need be tactile, the other lines being just visibly marked. The teams areas are those parts of the court which are within three metres of the goal lines. The tactile markings are effected for tournament play by covering builder's line or cord with 'Sportsline' or similar high quality tape. For less formal situations, and for the benefit of beginners, much thicker clothes line is often used, and is taped down with 5cm wide decorator's masking tape. The twelve orientation marks within the playing areas are of lengths 150cm (4), 50cm (4) and 15cm (4). In marking court it is advisable to look first for permanent 18m x 9m markings for volleyball on the sportshall floor. If they exist, marking out is much easier than starting with no reference marks.
