What Is Goalball? Who Can Play? How To Start ... Site Map What IS Goalball, you may ask?
Goalball is a highly competitive sport played three-against-three, indoors on a gym floorprimarily by blind and visually impaired athletes. Games are usually quite competitive and exciting to watch. Two teams play on either end of the 60x40 foot court. Players are blindfolded to make the game fair. The object is to throw a three-pound Goalball, which is sort of like a heavy basketball, past the opposing team. Now you may be asking yourself, "how do the players keep track of the ball if they're blind?" The ball has bells in it... sounding a lot like Christmas "jingle bells..." that allow the players to listen for it. When they hear the ball coming towards their end of the court, they dive, usually head-first, towards it hoping to block it with their body and stop it. If all three players miss the ball and it goes past the back line, it is considered a goal. The team with the most goals wins the game. There are usually several games in a typical tournament. Each game has two halves, each consisting of 10 minutes of playtime. The players use rope taped to the floor, or other similar tactile markings, to orientate themselves as to where they are on the court.

It is played on a floor approximately the size of a volleyball court. The lines are taped and have a cord under the tape so the players can feel the line. The object of the game is to roll a ball the size of a basketball through the opposing team and across the goal line. The ball has a bell inside and all players must wear a blindfold. There are three players on each team.

Goalball originated in Europe and is the only international team sport for the vision impaired played at the Paralympics. The game has been played at International level competition since its introduction at the Paralympics in 1976 and is also included in the World Championships for the Blind. What is goalball? Goalball is a unique team sport for the vision impaired, played by two teams of three players. All players are blind-folded to enable blind, vision impaired and sighted athletes to compete together (although in order to play in a national team, the athletes must be legally blind). New rule changes (1989) have made the sport a faster and more exciting game. Goalball can be played on any flat surface measuring 18m x 9m, but is best played on a polished wooden floor. The court is divided into two halves. Each half comprises 3 equal sections: Neutral Area, Landing Area and Team Area. Goals extend the full width of the court behind each team area. The course markings including players position markings are visibly marked with 5cm width tape. String is laid under the tape to enable easier player orientation. The game The game is of 14 minutes duration (playing time) divided into 2 x 7 minute halves. The game is played with a ball weighing 1.250kg with noise bells inside. The object is to throw the ball over the opponent's goal line using a bowling action.
