Who are we?
The Sheffield Goalball Group is a bunch of visually impaired people who, for reasons best known to themselves, enjoy throwing themselves on the floor and throwing a large hard ball at each other whilst blindfolded. Strangely enough, we think this is a fun way to spend our time. We also participate in various tournaments around the UK. We train on Monday evenings from 6-7pm at the Blind Institute on Mappin Street in Sheffield. For more information about training, email sheffield.scorpions@bigfoot.com
What is Goalball?
Goalball was originally developed in 1946 by Austrian Hanz Lorenzen and German Sepp Reindle, in an effort to help rehabilitate blinded war veterans. It has been an event at the Paralympics since 1976. Goalball is played on an indoor court measuring 18 x 9 metres. A team consists of 3 players, all of whom must wear blindfolds (usually blacked out ski masks), so that noone has any sight advantage. The object of the game is to roll the ball past the other team into their goal. In order to defend the goal, the players must dive onto the floor and lie stretched out in order to block the ball with their bodies. The ball has bells inside it so that you can hear it coming, and the court has tactile markings so you know where you are (string taped onto the floor). The game can soon become fast and furious, with balls reaching speeds of up to 50 mph., so the game requires fast reactions, courage, and intense concentration.

Contact Info Schedule Announcements INTRODUCTION
In response to demand within the Montreal Association for the Blind Transition Group (senior high school students support group), a league has been formed to practice the sport of Goalball recreationally. Our primary objective in setting up such a league was to preserve the recreational aspect that had been exhibited in past games. By keeping the league non-competitive we can essentially build on socializing between young blind and visually impaired clients of the MAB. ABOUT THE SPORT Goalball is a unique team sport for the visually impaired and blind, played by 2 teams of 5 players (of which only three per team can play at the same time). It is played on a court 9 meters in width and 18 meters in length with a smooth surface. All players are blindfolded to enable blind, visually impaired and sighted athletes to play together. The game is divided into two 7-minute halves. The ball is approximately the size of a basketball and contains noise bells. The object of the game is to roll the ball over your opponent's goal line using a bowling action. MISSION STATEMENT It has been expressed by many members of the Transition Group, that they enjoy being able to participate in a sport where their visual impairment does not put them at a disadvantage. It has also been shown that most of the members are not interested in becoming competitive players, but rather casual players. Our mission is to meet these needs. We aim to keep the league in the hands of the visually impaired and blind youth who will profit from it.

Photo by Bernard Gluckstein from The Triumph of the Human Spirit: The Atlanta Paralympic Experience (p. ). Oakville, Ontario: Disability Today Publishing Group. Goalball is an official sport at the Paralympic Games for athletes who are blind and visually impaired.
Athlete E ligibility and C lassification
Goalball is a team sport played by athletes who are blind or visually impaired, namely those who satisfy the IBSA criteria for participation in blind sports. Classification is a somewhat moot point in goalball given that all athletes wear eye shades that prevent the use of residual vision. For further information on the IBSA eligibility criteria, to to the IPC web site at http://www.paralympic.org . Click on "sports," then "goalball," then "classification."
Events
There are two divisions in goalball competition, men and women.
Playing A rea
Goalball is played on a volleyball court with 18m sidelines and 9m goal lines. Each half of the court is divided into three areas: (a) a 3m x 9m team area between the goal and the front line; (b) a 3m x 9m landing area between the front line and the high ball line; and (c) a 3m x 9m neutral area between the high ball line and the center line.
